Land Consumption Dynamics and Urban-Rural Continuum Mapping in Italy for SDG 11.3.1 Indicator Assessment

Angela Cimini et al.

Summary: For the first time in history, more than half of the global population lives in urban areas, leading to increased vulnerability and the need for monitoring urban dynamics and sustainability. This study examines the spatial extent and urban-rural continuum, analyzes urbanization processes, and monitors Sustainable Development Goal 11 using a methodology developed by the European Commission-Joint Research Center. The research highlights the importance of detailed spatialized population data in calculating SDG indicator 11.3.1 and proposes new indicators for analyzing urban sprawl.

Ecosystem Services for Planning Impacts Assessment on Urban Settlement Development

Angela Pilogallo et al.

Summary: Land-use changes induced by urban growth processes pose a significant threat to the conservation of natural habitats, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. While there is increasing interest in the academic field regarding the methodology of ecosystem services, there is a need for new methods and tools to assess the sustainability of urban and territorial planning choices. This study proposes a method to evaluate the effects of expansion forecasts in the urban plan of Perugia, which highlights the degradation increase and habitat quality decrease.
