Stigma for Seeking Psychological Help for Military Sexual Trauma Is Associated With More Frequent Suicidal Ideation Among Women Service Members and Veterans

Summary: This study examined the relationship between self-stigma and suicidal ideation among military sexual trauma survivors. The results showed a significant association between self-stigma and suicidal ideation, with self-stigma having a stronger impact. Therefore, reducing self-stigma associated with help-seeking may be beneficial in reducing suicidal ideation among military sexual trauma survivors.

Differential Effects of Parental and Self-Stigma on Intentions to Seek Counseling

Summary: This study examined the effects of parental stigma and self-stigma on counseling-seeking intentions among students of different ethnicities. The results showed that parental stigma positively predicted intentions to seek counseling for Asian international students, while self-stigma negatively predicted intentions for European and Asian American students.

Associations Between Public and Self-Stigma of Help-Seeking With Help-Seeking Attitudes and Intention: A Meta-Analytic Structural Equation Modeling Approach

Summary: The study finds that help-seeking self-stigma has a stronger impact on individuals' attitudes and intentions to seek help compared to help-seeking public stigma. Therefore, help-seeking campaigns should address both types of stigma by educating individuals to resist public stigmatizing perceptions and empowering them to seek help. The results also show that people who perceive more help-seeking stigma from others tend to have higher levels of self-stigma. Gender, age, collectivism, and social group do not significantly moderate the association between public and self-stigma.

Minority status, depression and suicidality among counseling center clients

Summary: This study explores the association between race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, financial stress, and mental health outcomes among university counseling center clients. The results show that Asian American college students tend to experience more depressive symptoms compared to European American and Hispanic students. Female and LGBQ individuals are more susceptible to depression and have a higher risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts. Additionally, students facing high financial stress are more likely to have depression and suicidal tendencies. The study suggests that individuals who identify with minority groups are at a higher risk for depression and suicidality.
