Implementing person-centred outcome measures in palliative care: An exploratory qualitative study using Normalisation Process Theory to understand processes and context

Summary: This study used Normalisation Process Theory to explore the causal mechanisms behind the successful implementation of Person-Centred Outcome Measures in palliative care. Through interviews with 63 healthcare professionals, seven main themes were identified, including subjectivity of measures, frequency and version of outcome scales, training and education, community engagement, electronic system readiness, communication skills, and reinforcement of value through use. Relationships influencing implementation were found to exist at individual and organisational levels, highlighting the importance of addressing these factors to drive the integration of outcome measures into routine palliative care practice.
