Insights into runoff changes in the source region of Yellow River under frozen ground degradation

Jingjing Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in the precipitation-runoff relationship in the source region of the Yellow River and examined the impact of frozen ground degradation on the water balance components. The results showed significant changes in the precipitation-runoff relationship since 1989. Frozen ground degradation altered the hydrological processes, leading to increased subsurface runoff and decreased surface runoff.

Evidence of ground ice melting detected by InSAR and in situ monitoring over permafrost terrain on the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau

Lingxiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed ground surface deformation and observed temperature and moisture data to investigate the thawing process of ice-rich permafrost. The results showed that long-term subsidence velocity is a reliable indicator of ground ice melting, and the melting of ice-poor permafrost does not result in significant subsidence. The study also found that geomorphological conditions affect the deformation velocity.

Magnitudes and patterns of large-scale permafrost ground deformation revealed by Sentinel-1 InSAR on the central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: By developing a permafrost-tailored InSAR approach, the study reconstructs seasonal and long-term deformation of permafrost and finds that ground deformation is mainly controlled by factors such as slope angle, with warm and ice-rich permafrost regions being more vulnerable to extensive long-term subsidence. Additionally, different types of permafrost regions exhibit varying deformation patterns.

Permafrost Ground Ice Melting and Deformation Time Series Revealed by Sentinel-1 InSAR in the Tanggula Mountain Region on the Tibetan Plateau

Lingxiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study utilized SBAS-InSAR to monitor ground surface deformation in the permafrost region of the Tanggula Mountains on the Tibetan Plateau. The study revealed significant subsidence in the region, with an average subsidence rate of 9.1 mm/a. There is a weak positive relationship between seasonal amplitude and long-term deformation velocity.

Characteristics of Freeze-Thaw Cycles in an Endorheic Basin on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Based on SBAS-InSAR Technology

Huayun Zhou et al.

Summary: This study used Sentinel-1 SAR data and SBAS-InSAR technology to analyze the freeze-thaw cycle characteristics in the Zonag Lake-Yanhu Lake permafrost-affected endorheic basin on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The results showed that the seasonal deformation amplitude ranged from 0 to 60 mm, with the maximum frost heave occurring between November 27th and March 21st and the maximum thaw settlement occurring between July 25th and September 21st. The deformation amplitude was found to be primarily influenced by vegetation cover, soil water content, and active layer thickness.

Contribution of ground ice melting to the expansion of Selin Co (lake) on the Tibetan Plateau

Lingxiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the contribution of ground ice melting to the expansion of Selin Co by evaluating the ground surface deformation. The results show that ground ice meltwater contributes approximately 12% of the lake volume increase, helping to balance the water budget. This study has important implications for understanding hydrological changes in watersheds underlain by permafrost.

The changing thermal state of permafrost

Sharon L. Smith et al.

Summary: Permafrost temperatures have increased in polar and high-elevation regions, affecting the climate system and the integrity of natural and built environments. Changes in permafrost temperature and active-layer thickness vary spatially and are influenced by climate, vegetation, snow cover, organic-layer thickness, and ground ice content.

Summary: The permafrost on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has significant impacts on climatic, hydrological, and ecological systems which have attracted global attention. Limited data have been reported due to challenges in working in this harsh region, but a monitoring network has been established to provide comprehensive datasets for verification and improvement of models in various scientific fields.

Top-of-permafrost ground ice indicated by remotely sensed late-season subsidence

Simon Zwieback et al.

Summary: Remote sensing of late-season subsidence can help identify ice-rich permafrost, particularly in areas lacking obvious manifestations of ground ice, such as hillslopes. Late-season subsidence shows high sensitivity and specificity, making it useful for automated mapping of ground ice distribution.
