Radiocarbon evidence for reduced deep water ventilation of the northern Indian Ocean during the last glacial maxima and early deglaciation

Kumari Nisha et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ventilation changes in deep waters of the northern Indian Ocean over the past 25 kyr BP, and finds that a greater proportion of CO2-rich Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) was present during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Heinrich Stadial (HS1). Poor ventilation during the last glaciation indicates that the northern Indian Ocean was part of the glacial carbon pool, while improved ventilation during the Bolling-Allerod (B-A) suggests the inflow of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) caused degassing from the northern Indian Ocean. Overall, this study supports the role of the Southern Ocean in modulating atmospheric CO2 variations during the last deglaciation.

Eastern Arabian Sea CO2 outgassing during the last deglaciation and Holocene related to deep-water carbonate chemistry

Smita N. Naik et al.

Summary: By analyzing samples of epibenthic foraminifera from the eastern Arabian Sea, this study reveals the variations of stored CO2 and carbonate ion in deep waters from the Last Glacial Maximum to the Holocene. The rise in CO2 and carbonate ion during the deglaciation and the mid-Holocene is attributed to the release of glacial CO2 from deep waters through the Southern Ocean and via intermediate waters of the eastern Arabian Sea.

Calibrating Non-Thermal Effects on Planktic Foraminiferal Mg/Ca for Application Across the Cenozoic

Laura L. Haynes et al.

Summary: Foraminiferal Mg/Ca is an important parameter for reconstructing past sea-surface temperature, but recent studies suggest that seawater pH, DIC, and Mg/Ca-sw composition can affect its accuracy. Laboratory culture experiments with living foraminifera reveal that pH effects are reduced or absent at certain Mg/Ca-sw values, and that T. sacculifer is the most insensitive species to variable DIC and pH, making it ideal for SST reconstructions.

Large freshwater-influx-induced salinity gradient and diagenetic changes in the northern Indian Ocean dominate the stable oxygen isotopic variation in Globigerinoides ruber

Rajeev Saraswat et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effect of freshwater-influx-induced seawater salinity and temperature on the stable oxygen isotopic ratio of planktic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber (white variety; delta(18)Oruber) in the northern Indian Ocean using 400 surface samples. The results showed that the freshwater-influx-induced salinity had a major control on delta(18)Oruber, and revised equations were proposed for better paleoclimatic reconstructions in the northern Indian Ocean.

Dissolved iron cycling in the Arabian Sea and sub-tropical gyre region of the Indian Ocean

Venkatesh Chinni et al.

Summary: Understanding the distribution of dissolved iron (DFe) is crucial for its role in ocean carbon and nitrogen fixation. The study in the northwestern Indian Ocean revealed higher DFe availability in the Arabian Sea compared to the subtropical Indian Ocean, positively correlated with primary production. Factors controlling DFe concentrations in the Arabian Sea were discussed, including lateral and vertical advection, particle dissolution, and biogeochemical processes.

Abrupt upwelling and CO2 outgassing episodes in the north-eastern Arabian Sea since mid-Holocene

Syed Azharuddin et al.

Summary: This study presents the first foraminifera-based delta B-11 record from the north-eastern Arabian Sea, providing insights into the historical variations in CO2 sink and source in the region. It reveals that the region behaved as a CO2 sink for most of the past 7.7 thousand years, but became a CO2 source during two short intervals associated with increased upwelling.

Monsoon- and ENSO-driven surface-water pCO2 variation in the tropical West Pacific since the Last Glacial Maximum

Zhifang Xiong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of the East Asian monsoon (EAM) and El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on seawater carbonate chemistry in the tropical Pacific. The results show a correlation between the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon and variations in surface-water carbonate chemistry. Rapid changes in carbonate chemistry are linked to ENSO-like states and the East Asian winter monsoon. These findings suggest that tropical conditions play a crucial role in glacial-interglacial atmospheric CO2 concentration changes.

Millennial Variability in Intermediate Ocean Circulation and Indian Monsoonal Weathering Inputs During the Last Deglaciation and Holocene

Zhaojie Yu et al.

Summary: This study provides new evidence for the relationship between ocean circulation and monsoon systems over orbital to sub-millennial timescales. The results indicate that Indian Summer Monsoon weakening coincided with enhanced northward Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) advection during the last deglaciation, while the Early Holocene was characterized by enhanced monsoon strength but persistently strong AAIW inflow. These findings indicate asynchronous changes in the global atmosphere-ocean-climate system.

Deglacial Subantarctic CO2 outgassing driven by a weakened solubility pump

Yuhao Dai et al.

Summary: The Subantarctic Southern Ocean plays an important role in increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide partial pressure during glacial-interglacial transitions. Previous studies have focused on the biological pump but have largely overlooked the influences of the solubility pump. This research shows that the solubility pump has a stronger impact on Subantarctic surface-water pCO(2) variabilities during deglaciations compared to the biological pump.

Early deglacial CO2 release from the Sub-Antarctic Atlantic and Pacific oceans

R. Shuttleworth et al.

Summary: Research indicates that there were two transient intervals of pronounced atmospheric CO2 rise during the last deglaciation, possibly due to deep ocean carbon release from the Southern Ocean and a decline in global efficiency of the biological carbon pump. The Sub-Antarctic region experienced upwelling of carbon-rich water during Heinrich Stadial 1, contributing to the initial increase in atmospheric CO2, but there was no significant outgassing of deep ocean carbon from this region during other periods.

The Southern Ocean during the ice ages: A review of the Antarctic surface isolation hypothesis, with comparison to the North Pacific

Daniel M. Sigman et al.

Summary: The Southern Ocean, specifically the Antarctic and Subantarctic Zones, played crucial roles in lowering CO2 levels during the ice age. This was achieved through iron fertilization in the Subantarctic Zone and surface isolation in the Antarctic Zone. The changes in both regions were likely caused by a weakening and/or equatorward shift in the upwelling associated with westerly winds.

Deep water circulation in the Arabian Sea during the last glacial cycle: Implications for paleo-redox condition, carbon sink and atmospheric CO2 variability

N. Lathika et al.

Summary: Global overturning circulation in the Arabian Sea, northwest Indian Ocean, during the past 136 ka shows significant variations in water mass sources, with more flow of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) during the glacials and North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) during the interglacials. The Arabian Sea receives a higher fraction of AABW compared to the equatorial Indian Ocean during the interglacials, indicating differences in deep water exports from the Southern Ocean. The findings have important implications for regional biogeochemical processes, paleo-redox conditions, carbon sink, and atmospheric CO2 variability during glacial-interglacial climate transitions.

Surface pH Record (1990-2013) of the Arabian Sea From Boron Isotopes of Lakshadweep Corals-Trend, Variability, and Control

Mohd Tarique et al.

Summary: A study on the Arabian Sea revealed a sub-annually resolved pH record with large variability but no long-term discernable trend. The study suggests that physical oceanographic processes largely control surface pH variability, masking the expected long-term ocean acidification trend due to anthropogenic CO2 rise. Predictions indicate more frequent and larger pH variability (pH extremes) in the region due to the increase in ENSO events in a future warming scenario.
