Characterization of FA1654: A putative DPS protein in Filifactor alocis

Malissa Mangar et al.

Summary: The survival and adaptation of Filifactor alocis in the inflammatory environment of the periodontal pocket require the ability to overcome oxidative stress. Its pathogenic characteristics include survival in the oxidative-stress microenvironment of the periodontal pocket and a probable ability to modulate microbial community dynamics. However, there is still a significant gap in our understanding of the mechanism of its oxidative stress resistance and its impact on biofilm virulence and pathogenicity.

ABC Transporters in Bacterial Nanomachineries

Florestan L. Bilsing et al.

Summary: Members of the superfamily of ABC transporters are present in all domains of life. Most of these transporters function as independent entities, utilizing ATP to actively transport substrates across membranes. However, some ABC transporters are part of larger protein complexes known as nanomachineries, which facilitate the vectorial transport of substrates. In this article, we focus on four bacterial examples of such nanomachineries and provide a summary of existing data, as well as a structure-function analysis that highlights the mechanistic coupling of ATP hydrolysis to substrate translocation.

Newly identified pathogens in periodontitis: evidence from an association and an elimination study

Eduardo Lobao Veras et al.

Summary: We assessed the level of evidence for the presence of new periodontal pathogens by comparing the occurrence of non-classical periodontal taxa between healthy and periodontitis patients (Association study) and analyzing the changes in prevalence and levels of these species after treatments (Elimination study). Our findings suggest strong evidence supporting certain bacterial species as periodontal pathogens, contributing to a better understanding of the etiology of periodontitis and guiding future diagnostic and interventional studies.

New putative periodontopathogens and periodontal health-associated species: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Angeline Antezack et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between new putative periodontal pathogens and periodontitis, finding statistically significant correlations. Further research should be conducted to explore the interspecies interaction and host-microbe crosstalk analysis of these newly identified periodontitis-associated microorganisms.

The C-Terminal Domain of Staphylococcus aureus Zinc Transport Protein AdcA Binds Plasminogen and Factor H In Vitro

Natalia Salazar et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus has evolved strategies to acquire metals from the host, such as iron, manganese, and zinc, for survival and colonization. The bacteria also utilize adhesins on the bacterial surface and acquire host plasminogen and complement regulatory proteins for colonization and infection. In vitro data shows that the zinc transport protein AdcA interacts with host molecules like plasminogen and factor H, paving the way for future studies on the relevance of these interactions in vivo.

Regulation of Bacterial Manganese Homeostasis and Usage During Stress Responses and Pathogenesis

Julia E. Martin et al.

Summary: Manganese plays a crucial role in the survival of pathogenic and symbiotic bacteria, as well as in the growth of free-living bacteria in stressful environments. Recent research has identified key components of the bacterial Mn homeostasis systems and revealed how Mn is used inside the cell. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms and interactions with other metals provides valuable insights for understanding bacterial virulence and survival strategies.

Toward Personalized Oral Diagnosis: Distinct Microbiome Clusters in Periodontitis Biofilms

Roland Wirth et al.

Summary: The study focused on the characteristics of subgingival biofilms and their relationship with periodontitis, finding correlations between microbial communities and clinical diagnostic parameters in periodontitis patients, which were significantly different from healthy microbial communities. Tannerella forsythia may be a potential indicator of periodontitis.

Filifactor alocis: Recent Insights and Advances

E. Aja et al.

Summary: Filifactor alocis is a diagnostic indicator of periodontal disease, known for its resistance to oxidative stress, production of unique proteases and collagenases causing host cell damage, enabling it to thrive and outcompete other pathogens in the inflammatory environment of the periodontal pocket.
