Week-Long Operation of Electrochemical Aptamer Sensors: New Insights into Self-Assembled Monolayer Degradation Mechanisms and Solutions for Stability in Serum at Body Temperature

Zach Watkins et al.

Summary: Conventional wisdom suggests that self-assembled alkylthiolate monolayers on gold are not stable when exposed to complex fluids such as raw serum at body temperature. However, this study demonstrates that these monolayers can last for at least 1 week under such conditions and can provide significant value for continuous electrochemical aptamer biosensors.

Combinatorial Polyacrylamide Hydrogels for Preventing Biofouling on Implantable Biosensors

Doreen Chan et al.

Summary: In this study, a combinatorial library of polyacrylamide-based copolymer hydrogels was created to discover and evaluate novel anti-biofouling materials. It was found that certain nonintuitive copolymer compositions exhibit superior anti-biofouling properties over current gold-standard materials.

A system for multiplexed selection of aptamers with exquisite specificity without counterselection

Alex M. Yoshikawa et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-throughput screening process for generating high-specificity aptamers to multiple targets without the need for counterselection. The process can be easily adapted to different small-molecule analytes, accelerating the development of aptamer reagents with high specificity for target analytes.

TNF controls a speed-accuracy tradeoff in the cell death decision to restrict viral spread

Jennifer Oyler-Yaniv et al.

Summary: Research shows that exposure to TNF during viral infection causes cells to adjust their speed-versus-accuracy balance in cell death decision-making, to limit the spread of HSV-1.
