Sustainable Apple Disease Management in China: Challenges and Future Directions for a Transforming Industry

Xiaofei Liang et al.

Summary: Apple trees are grown worldwide and have numerous health benefits when consumed fresh. China is responsible for about half of the global apple supply. However, apple growing in China differs greatly from western countries in terms of diseases and management strategies. In recent years, China's apple industry has rapidly transitioned to larger-scale enterprises with advanced technology, resulting in new challenges in disease management.

Developing a management strategy based on the relationships between brown rot and codling moth in two apple production systems

Imre J. Holb et al.

Summary: This study examined the reactions of different apple cultivars to brown rot (BR) and codling moth damage (CMD) in integrated and organic production systems. The results showed that resistant cultivars had low incidence of BR and CMD, while commercial and old cultivars had medium to high incidence. Based on these findings, a new management strategy for BR and CMD was developed and shown to reduce spray applications and maintain similar disease incidences compared to a general pest management programme.

Comparative Analysis of Environmental and Economic Performance of Agricultural Cooperatives and Smallholder Farmers for Apple Production in China

Juanjuan Cheng et al.

Summary: This study compared the environmental and economic performance of apple production between cooperatives and smallholder farmers using the methods of life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost (LCC). The results showed that cooperatives significantly reduced resource depletion and environmental impacts compared to smallholder farmers, while also having lower total life cycle cost (LCC) and higher net profit. The study provides insights into optimizing farm inputs for apple production and active participation in agricultural cooperatives to promote sustainable development of the apple industry in China.

Delayed Development of Resistance to QoI Fungicide in Venturia inaequalis in Israeli Apple Orchards and Improved Apple Scab Management Using Fungicide Mixtures

Lior Gur et al.

Summary: QoI fungicides were introduced in Israel in 1997 for apple scab control, with resistance observed only after 14 years of use, mainly in northern Israel since 2011. Resistance is related to limited fungicidal sprays and confirmed through molecular-based studies. Growers are now advised to use tank mixtures of systemic fungicides for effective management.
