WT1 as a myoepithelial marker: a comparative study of breast, cutaneous, and salivary gland lesions

Joanna K. M. Ng et al.

Summary: WT1 immunostain is expressed in various benign and malignant neoplasms, as well as normal myoepithelial cells. The expression profile of WT1 differs in non-neoplastic, benign, and malignant neoplastic myoepithelial cells of the salivary gland. WT1 is a less sensitive myoepithelial marker than calponin and p63, but its unique expression pattern in salivary gland primary for pleomorphic adenomas/cutaneous mixed tumors can aid in the diagnosis of benign salivary gland tumors.

Immunohistochemical Characterization of a Large Cohort of Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Rachel Han et al.

Summary: This study examined the expression of widely used immunohistochemical markers in triple negative breast cancer and found that almost all of these tumors expressed at least one marker. Carcinoma of apocrine differentiation was characterized by AR positive, SOX10 negative, and K5 negative or focal immunophenotype. Caution should be taken when interpreting site-specific markers in excluding the diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer, considering the knowledge of antibody clones.

Clinicopathological significance of WT1 expression in invasive breast carcinoma with >90% mucinous component

Xiaoli Xu et al.

Summary: In invasive breast carcinoma with >90% mucinous component, WT1 expression is significantly associated with low-intermediate nuclear/histological grade, ER positivity, HER2 negativity, a lower Ki-67 proliferation index and no LN metastasis. Micropapillary architecture was observed in 80% of cases.

Metaplastic carcinomas of the breast without evidence of epithelial differentiation: a diagnostic approach for management

Emad A. Rakha et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a large series of metaplastic breast carcinoma cases to improve the consistency of diagnosis and management for such rare malignant sarcomatoid breast tumors without evidence of epithelial differentiation. The study found that some cases of metaplastic breast carcinoma lack cytokeratin expression and may represent an extreme end of differentiation that can be considered as carcinomas rather than sarcomas for management purposes.

Adenomyoepithelioma of the breast: a proposal for classification

Emad Rakha et al.

Summary: Breast lesions with prominent myoepithelial cell component consist of a heterogeneous group of benign and malignant neoplastic proliferations, which can be dual or purely myoepithelial in nature. The distinction between the two cell components may not be clear-cut in malignant lesions, with uncertain histogenesis of myoepithelial cells.
