Should I be portrayed like this? An exploration of Indian women in television advertising

Gender inequality as a social construction in India: A phenomenological enquiry

Summary: The qualitative analysis explored the concept of gender equality in India from an indigenous-cultural point of view. It identified three overarching themes: Social construction and accentuation of differences, Tunnel vision view of gender equality, and Holistic and multi-level reforms. These themes highlight the impact of societal factors on gender equality beliefs and propose a culture-appropriate plan of action to achieve holistic and sustainable gender equality in India.

Summary: This article reveals how colorism not only leads to gender inequality in marriage but also contributes to noncustomary cross-region marriage migrations in India, affecting women's lives on a daily basis. Dispossession of matrimonial choice forces women to accept proposals from North Indian bachelors, leading to new forms of gender subordination and skin-tone discrimination within marriages.
