Comparative metabolomics of Himalayan crab apple (Malus baccata) with commercially utilized apple (Malus domestica) using UHPLC-QTOF-IMS coupled with multivariate analysis

Summary: A metabolomics investigation was conducted on the skin and pulp of Malus domestica and Malus baccata, revealing higher phenolic and flavonoid contents in M. domestica fruit parts. Antioxidant activity was also observed in both fruits. The study quantified higher chlorogenic acid in MD_pulp and phloridzin in MD_skin. Additionally, 248 distinctive metabolites were identified using non-targeted metabolomics. Pathway analysis indicated that the biosynthesis of flavone and flavonols is prevalent in both fruits. The study suggests that M. baccata has comparable metabolite distribution and potential for health-beneficial products.

Cachrys L. Genus: A Comprehensive Review on Botany, Phytochemistry and Biological Properties

Summary: The Cachrys genus is widely distributed in the Mediterranean basin and contains plant species endemic to southern Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. Previous studies have focused on the phytochemical composition and biological properties of Cachrys spp., specifically the essential oils obtained from these plants which are rich in coumarins, particularly furanocoumarins. Other phytochemicals such as terpenes, fatty acids, phytosterols, and flavonoids have also been identified. Additionally, these plants have shown various biological properties including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and photocytotoxic effects. However, a comprehensive review on the chemical and pharmacological properties of this genus is lacking in the literature. This paper aims to provide an overview of the identified phytochemicals and biological effects of Cachrys spp., as well as its potential as a source of bioactive compounds. The current taxonomy, traditional uses, and toxicological aspects of plants belonging to this genus are also discussed, along with future research directions.

A Comparative Study of Chamomile Essential Oils and Lipophilic Extracts Obtained by Conventional and Greener Extraction Techniques: Chemometric Approach to Chemical Composition and Biological Activity

Summary: In this study, traditional and modern separation techniques such as hydrodistillation and supercritical fluid extraction were utilized to efficiently extract high-value compounds from chamomile. GC analysis revealed that oxygenated sesquiterpenes and non-terpene compounds were the dominant components, with alpha-bisabolol oxide A and alpha-bisabolol oxide B being the most abundant individual compounds. The biological potential of the essential oils and extracts showed that the essential oils had better antioxidant activity, while the extracts exhibited better inhibition of the tested enzymes. Molecular docking experiments identified alpha-bisabolol oxide B as having higher affinity for tyrosinase.

Chemical Characterization and Multidirectional Biological Effects of Different Solvent Extracts of Arum elongatum: in Vitro and in Silico Approaches

Summary: This study investigated the antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities of four extracts from Arum elongatum, and identified 28 compounds in the extracts. The extracts showed high antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities, which could be attributed to the presence of compounds such as chlorogenic acids, caffeic acid, and kaempferol. Further investigations are needed to explore the potential of Arum elongatum extracts in developing biopharmaceuticals.

Evaluation of the toxicity of Caralluma europaea (C.E) extracts and their effects on apoptosis and chemoresistance in pancreatic cancer cells

Summary: This study evaluates the toxicity and effects of Caralluma europaea (C.E) extracts on pancreatic cancer cells. The extracts were found to inhibit cell survival, induce apoptosis, and sensitize cells to chemotherapy. Furthermore, they downregulated cancer stemness-associated genes. The results suggest that C.E extracts could be a potential treatment for pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

New Biological and Chemical Insights into Optimization of Chamomile Extracts by Using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) Model

Summary: Chamomile is widely used as a medicinal plant and its optimal extraction conditions were determined using an artificial neural network model. The optimized conditions included a solid-to-solvent ratio of 1:80, microwave power of 400 W, and extraction time of 30 min. The extract obtained under these conditions had a rich composition and high biological activity, and showed potential as a growth medium for probiotics. This study contributes to the improvement of extraction techniques using modern statistical designs and modeling.

Impact of phenolic composition and antioxidant parameters on the ageing potential of Syrah red wines measured by accelerated ageing tests

Summary: This study selected 14 Syrah red wines with different initial composition and antioxidant properties and conducted three different accelerated ageing tests. The results showed high correlations between the initial phenolic composition and antioxidant properties of the samples. Partial least squares (PLS) regressions were used to establish models that can predict the AATs test results based on their different initial composition and antioxidant properties. The PLS regression models had overall very good accuracy with correlation coefficients (r2) > 0.89.

Phenolic mapping and associated antioxidant activities through the annual growth cycle of sugar maple leaves

Summary: Concentrations and attributes of antioxidant components in sugar maple leaves were studied based on HPLC-UV and radical scavenging/redox potential methods respectively. Colorimetry, SEM, and FTIR spectroscopy measurements were conducted to characterize the composition of leaves throughout the growth cycle. The results showed that the antioxidant activities of sugar maple leaves were strongly associated with phenolic contents and varied significantly with harvesting time. The FTIR spectra revealed the presence of functional groups that are important for the antioxidant activity. Principal component analysis indicated that the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds in sugar maple leaves mainly occurs during the leaf expansion and growth phases. These findings provide valuable insight into the effect of harvesting time on the phenolic composition of sugar maple leaves and their potential use as functional food ingredients.
