Effects of High-tech Versus Low-tech AAC on Indices of Happiness for School-aged Children with Multiple Disabilities

Christine Holyfield et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of two AAC technologies on the happiness indices of school-age children with multiple disabilities. The high-tech AAC condition resulted in higher happiness indices compared to the low-tech AAC condition. This study adds to existing evidence for the benefits of high-tech AAC intervention and highlights the potential of happiness indices in clinical decision making.

A Systematic Review of Research Comparing Mobile Technology Speech-Generating Devices to Other AAC Modes with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Elizabeth R. Lorah et al.

Summary: This systematic review compared AAC modes for individuals with ASD and found that most participants preferred and performed better using mobile technology based speech-generating devices. Practitioners are recommended to consider using these devices to promote verbal behavior in children with ASD, but further research is needed to evaluate additional verbal operants and include adolescent and adult participants.

A systematic search and appraisal of intervention characteristics used to develop varied communication functions in children with autism who use aided AAC

Kristy Logan et al.

Summary: This study systematically searched and appraised existing research on aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and found that these interventions are effective in teaching various communication functions. The study identified a wide range of intervention components and targeted behaviors, but found that structured and context-bound routines, with the use of time delay and prompting strategies, were most successful in teaching communication skills.

A Systematic Review of Evidence-based Instruction for Individuals with Autism Using Mobile Augmentative and Alternative Communication Technology

Elizabeth R. Lorah et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines evidence-based practices in the use of mobile augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technology for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who have limited to no vocal speech abilities. The review found that various strategies have been successfully used in AAC intervention, and evaluated quality indicators, communication behavior types, participant characteristics, and technology types. Implications for clinicians and suggestions for further research are discussed.

How Might Indices of Happiness Inform Early Intervention Research and Decision Making?

Amarie Carnett et al.

Summary: This study explores how to collect direct data on indices of happiness to assess the acceptability of an intervention. The results show that happiness levels vary at individual and dyad levels. As caregiver fidelity increases, caregiver happiness indices increase, but child happiness indices decrease after acquiring the targeted skill.

Comparative Effects of Picture Symbol With Paired Text and Text-Only Augmentative and Alternative Communication Representations on Communication From Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Christine Holyfield

Summary: The study found that children with ASD who have limited speech abilities can acquire communication skills at comparable rates whether using picture symbols with paired text or text-only representation in AAC. The participants were able to generalize their communication abilities to the text-only representation condition. Clinicians and technology developers may consider increasing the use of text in AAC representation given the value associated with learning to recognize written words.
