Formulation of antiretroviral nanocrystals and development into a microneedle delivery system for potential treatment of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND)

Marco T. A. Abbate et al.

Summary: HIV/AIDS remains a global public health issue, which can lead to HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder due to the restriction of drugs crossing the blood-brain barrier. The nose-to-brain pathway and facial intradermal injection provide potential solutions to deliver drugs into the central nervous system. Nanoparticles and microneedle arrays are effective in increasing drug delivery via these routes.

Development of dissolving microneedles for intradermal delivery of the long-acting antiretroviral drug bictegravir

Chunyang Zhang et al.

Summary: Oral administration and intramuscular injection are common methods for HIV treatment but face limitations such as poor patient compliance. To overcome these limitations, novel dissolving microneedles (MNs) were proposed for delivering long-acting nanosuspensions of the ARV drug bictegravir (BIC) for HIV treatment and prevention. The MNs demonstrated favorable mechanical properties and were able to deliver the drug effectively in animal studies.

Taylor cone height as a tool to understand properties of electrospun PVDF nanofibers

Shivam Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of process parameters on the height of Taylor cone and the corresponding nanofiber properties was investigated for PVDF using DMF as solvent. Optimized values of 1 mL/h for feed rate, 10.8 kV for applied voltage, and 10 cm for tip to mandrel distance were identified. The relationship between Taylor cone height and nanofiber diameter was found to be directly proportional for feed rate and applied voltage, but inversely proportional for tip to mandrel distance.

Nanosuspension-loaded dissolving bilayer microneedles for hydrophobic drug delivery to the posterior segment of the eye

Yu Wu et al.

Summary: An alternative system of nanosuspensions (NS) and dissolving microneedles (MNs) was developed for the minimally invasive transscleral delivery of hydrophobic drugs. The optimized NS-loaded MNs demonstrated higher drug deposition and better penetration compared to plain drug-loaded MNs. The developed hybrid system showed excellent biocompatibility with ocular tissues and could potentially be used as an effective and minimally invasive technology for the treatment of retinal diseases.
