Research on the influence of vegetation restoration in loess open-pit coal mines of China: Influencing factors and mechanism

Shufei Wang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the influence of soil and topography on vegetation in a reclaimed mining area, using the south dump of the Antianbao open-pit coal mine as the research object. The results show that there is great heterogeneity in the quality of reclaimed land, with elevation and aspect significantly affecting vegetation conditions. Soil factors, such as available potassium, total nitrogen, organic matter, gravel concentration, have the greatest impact on vegetation. The findings are highly significant for improving and managing future reclamation sites and enhancing the homogeneity and system stability of reclamation sites.

Robinia pseudoacacia decline and fine root dynamics in a plantation chronosequence in the Yellow River Delta, China

Longmei Guo et al.

Summary: Fine root dynamics affected by soil environments and stand age play a significant role in tree growth and stand productivity. Our study illustrates the general growth patterns of tree growth and fine root dynamics of R. pseudoacacia plantations under salt stress and related to soil environments (nutrients, moisture, salinity) in the Yellow River Delta, China. Thinning stands at an appropriate time (after 32 years in this study) and relevant engineering measures to reduce soil salt content should be carried out to improve fine root growth and stand productivity. Additionally, replacing old R. pseudoacacia stands that suffer severe decline and mortality with new plantations will be necessary for sustainable management of plantations and maintaining a reasonably high level of forest productivity in coastal saline-alkali areas.

Rates and drivers of aboveground carbon accumulation in global monoculture plantation forests

Jacob J. Bukoski et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors analyze the aboveground carbon accumulation in tree monocultures globally and identify key predictors such as prior land use, taxonomic identity, and plant traits. The results show a four-fold variation in carbon accumulation rates across tree genera, plant functional types, and biomes, as well as the key mediators of this variation.

Global stocks and capacity of mineral-associated soil organic carbon

Katerina Georgiou et al.

Summary: This study estimates the stocks and storage capacity of mineral-associated organic carbon globally by analyzing soil profiles. The results show that the current carbon stocks in non-permafrost mineral soils account for 66% to 70% of soil carbon in surface and deeper layers, respectively, but only 42% to 21% of the mineralogical capacity. Agricultural management regions and deeper soil layers exhibit the largest undersaturation of mineral-associated carbon. Soil carbon furthest from its mineralogical capacity is more effective at accruing carbon over years to decades.

Allometric models for the estimation of foliage area and biomass from stem metrics in black locust

Stamatios R. Tziaferidis et al.

Summary: Allometric equations relating trees' vascular system and other stem metrics with foliage area and mass are necessary to estimate their growth and carbon balance. This study focused on restoration plantations of Robinia pseudoacacia in Greece and aimed to establish species-specific models to predict foliage leaf area and biomass. The study found that total stem cross-sectional area at mid-bole and stump height was the best predictor of foliage dry mass and area.

Allometric Models for Estimating the Height of Robinia pseudoacacia L. in Restoration Plantations

Dimitrios Manolopoulos et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop height growth models for black locust plantations in restoration plantations of former mining areas. The results showed that black locust plantations grow well and are an excellent species for restoring former mines. However, site quality and other factors were not taken into account in this study.

Global Carbon Budget 2021

Pierre Friedlingstein et al.

Summary: Accurate assessment of anthropogenic CO2 emissions and their redistribution among different components is critical for understanding the global carbon cycle. This study presents datasets and methodologies to quantify the major components of the global carbon budget. The results show changes in fossil fuel and land-use change emissions, as well as atmospheric CO2 concentration, ocean CO2 sink, and terrestrial CO2 sink.

The development of soil organic carbon under young black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) trees at a post-mining landscape in eastern Germany

Michael Kanzler et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of short rotation alley cropping systems (SRACS) for improving soil fertility at marginal post-mining sites in Brandenburg, Germany. Planting black locust trees led to a significant increase in soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and stabilization, particularly in the uppermost soil layers. The findings suggest that black locust trees are suitable for increasing soil fertility and can serve as an effective recultivation measure at marginal sites.

Carbon fractions in the world's dead wood

Adam R. Martin et al.

Summary: The study highlights the uncertainty in quantifying dead wood carbon pools globally due to a lack of accurate dead wood carbon fractions. By analyzing a global database, the study found that dead wood carbon fractions in trees average 48.5%, which deviates from the commonly used default value of 50%. Utilizing data-driven dead wood carbon fractions may help correct systematic overestimates in dead wood carbon stocks and provide more accurate global forest carbon estimation.

Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture and Its Mitigation Strategies: A Review

Gurdeep Singh Malhi et al.

Summary: Climate change, driven by greenhouse gas emissions, poses a global threat to food and nutritional security. Despite the positive effects of increased CO2 concentration on plant growth and productivity, the rising temperatures have negative impacts on crop activities, pest infestation, and weed flora. Mitigation strategies are necessary to address the economic impact of climate change on agriculture.

Assessing Black Locust Biomass Accumulation in Restoration Plantations

Gavriil Spyroglou et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the accumulation of AGB and deadwood in vegetation areas planted with black locust in Northwest Greece, using an allometric model and inventory measurements. Results showed that the average AGB in the area was low, and deadwood was scarce, indicating some progress in the restoration of mining areas with black locust.

Assessment of soil fertility degradation affected by mining disturbance and land use in a coalfield via machine learning

Ziguan Wang et al.

Summary: This study focused on evaluating the spatial and temporal variations of soil fertility indicators under different land use types and mining disturbances in a coalfield on the Loess Plateau of China. The research revealed that the intensity of soil fertility degradation could be classified into three clusters based on DBSCAN results and variations in soil fertility indicators, with land use types and coal mining years significantly affecting the degree of degradation. Total nitrogen and soil organic matter were identified as key factors impacting the classification of soil fertility degradation.

Factors controlling soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks following afforestation with Robinia pseudoacacia on cropland across China

Yangzhou Xiang et al.

Summary: The study found that afforestation with Robinia pseudoacacia significantly increased soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks, with the increase increasing with plantation age and altitude, but decreasing with factors such as mean annual temperature, slope gradients, soil depth, soil clay content, initial SOC content, and initial STN content. Among four kinds of biotic and abiotic factors, plantation attributes made the greatest contributions to the variance in the response size of SOC and STN stocks.
