Deciphering How Anion Clusters Govern Lithium Conduction in Glassy Thiophosphate Electrolytes through Machine Learning

Zhimin Chen et al.

Summary: By simulating glassy Li2S-P2S5 electrolytes with different fractions of polyatomic anion clusters, this study reveals the structural origins of lithium-ion mobility and identifies that soft (high mobility) lithium ions are predominantly found around PS43- units, while hard (low mobility) ions are found around P2S64- units. The soft lithium-ion migration requires a smaller energy barrier to be overcome compared to the hard lithium-ion migration.

Sustainable synthesis of SiS2 for solid-state electrolytes by cascaded metathesis

William H. Smith et al.

Summary: Sulfide-based electrolytes containing silicon have high ionic conductivity and are used in solid-state batteries for electric vehicles. However, their deployment is limited by the high cost and low availability of the SiS2 precursor. This study introduces a green synthesis of SiS2 through metathesis reactions, enabling the recycling of expensive components and solvents in a circular economy.

Ionic Conductivity of a Solid Polymer Electrolyte Confined in Nanopores

Chien-Hua Tu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of imbibition in nanopores on the ionic conductivity of the polymer electrolyte PEO/LiTFSI using in situ nanodielectric spectroscopy. The results reveal two distinct stages of imbibition and a decrease in ion conductivity after imbibition. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy confirms the presence of Li+ and TFSI- ions in the templates, and the long timescale of conductivity reduction is attributed to polymer adsorption on pore walls.

Deciphering Fast Ion Transport in Glasses: A Case Study of Sodium and Silver Vitreous Sulfides

Mohammad Kassem et al.

Summary: High-capacity solid-state batteries are future products for large-scale energy storage, and sodium fast ion conductors are unparalleled materials for these applications. The study shows that isolated sulfur species are related to preferential diffusion pathways in vitreous sodium and silver sulfides, which can be used as a reliable descriptor for fast ion transport. The rational design of sulfide electrolytes can lead to superior ionic diffusion in glassy systems.

Crucial role of S8-rings in structural, relaxation, vibrational, and electronic properties of liquid sulfur close to the λ transition

H. Flores-Ruiz et al.

Summary: Liquid sulfur has been studied in terms of its structure, vibrational properties, and electronic energy using density-functional based molecular dynamics simulations. The research reveals that at low temperatures, liquid sulfur consists mainly of twofold sulfur and as temperature increases, S-8 rings open up. The vibrational properties of liquid sulfur show a peak at 60 meV, which is associated with both chains and rings.

Opening Diffusion Pathways through Site Disorder: The Interplay of Local Structure and Ion Dynamics in the Solid Electrolyte Li6+xP1-xGexS5I as Probed by Neutron Diffraction and NMR

Katharina Hogrefe et al.

Summary: This study focused on the impact of cation substitution on Li+ ion dynamics using Li6+xP1-xGexS5I as a model system, revealing that replacing P5+ with Ge4+ not only causes anion site disorder but also allows Li+ ions to occupy initially empty sites between Li rich cages. NMR results showed new Li+ exchange processes in Ge-rich samples with low activation barriers, facilitating rapid ion exchange processes between Li cages.
