Oxygen Reserve Index and Arterial Partial Pressure of Oxygen: Relationship in Open Heart Surgery

Mustafa E. Fadel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the relationship between Oxygen Reserve Index (ORI) and arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) in open-heart surgery. The results showed a significant correlation between ORI and PaO2 in the mild to moderate hyperoxic range, suggesting its potential use in precise oxygen therapy and as an early warning system for hypoxia.

Oxygen Reserve Index as a Tool to Monitor Four Techniques of Oxygen Supplementation at Different Flow Rates in Dogs Sedated with Dexmedetomidine and an Opioid

Luca Bellini et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of four common oxygen delivery techniques in increasing the oxygen reserve index (ORi). The results showed that nasal prongs and the mask connected to the Venturi valve had the highest correlation with the oxygen flow rate and ORi. These findings have implications for optimizing oxygen therapy.

How early warning with the Oxygen Reserve Index (ORi™) can improve the detection of desaturation during induction of general anesthesia?

Hung-Wei Cheng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of ORi alarm triggers on warning time, finding that triggers set at the ORi peak and ORi 0.55 values provided significantly added warning time. There was a positive correlation between ORi and PaO2, suggesting that it can help monitor patients' oxygenation status during induction of general anesthesia.

Effectiveness of preoxygenation by conventional face mask versus non-invasive ventilation in morbidly obese patients: measurable by the oxygen-reserve index?

Janina Bathe et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of two different preoxygenation maneuvers on the grade of hyperoxia in morbidly obese patients. The results showed that although non-invasive ventilation preoxygenation resulted in significantly higher arterial oxygen partial pressure compared to standard preoxygenation, the oxygen reserve index was unable to differentiate between the two maneuvers.

The ability of Oxygen Reserve Index® to detect hyperoxia in critically ill patients

Hugues de Courson et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ORI in detecting arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) > 100mmHg. The results showed that ORI had relatively low ability in diagnosing hyperoxia, while SpO(2) provided better detection.

Oxygen reserve index as a noninvasive indicator of arterial partial pressure of oxygen in anaesthetized donkeys: a preliminary study

Luca Bellini et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of ORI as a noninvasive estimate of PaO2 during moderate hyperoxaemia in anaesthetized donkeys with high FIO2. ORI values were found to be indicative of PaO2 levels above 100, 150, and 200 mmHg, with potential clinical relevance.

Characteristics of arterial catheter use and related complications in dogs and cats in an intensive care unit

Matthew J. Hagley et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify characteristics of arterial catheter use, including indwelling times and reasons for removal, and analyze potential risk factors for complications based on patient- and catheter-related variables. The results showed that arterial catheter-related complications were relatively frequent, but most complications were minor and did not justify removal of the catheter, suggesting that the use of arterial catheters in both species is relatively safe. Further research is needed to assess complications related to longer catheter indwelling times, particularly in cats.
