Urban waterlogging prediction and risk analysis based on rainfall time series features: A case study of Shenzhen

Zongjia Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, the frequency of extreme weather and urban waterlogging caused by sudden rainfall has increased. To accurately predict and early warn waterlogging hazards, a novel waterlogging depth prediction model based on rainfall data is proposed in this paper. By analyzing historical flooding monitoring data, a rainfall-waterlogging amplification factor is constructed to quantify the mapping relationship between rainfall and waterlogging depths. The model improves prediction performance and overcomes the limitations of monitoring stations and historical data, enabling more accurate short-term waterlogging prediction.

On the intensity decay of tropical cyclones before landfall

S. Wang et al.

Summary: The decay process of tropical cyclones from their ocean maximum intensity to landfall intensity remains unclear, but it is of fundamental importance in determining the socio-economic impact of these cyclones. This study presents a logistic decay model that connects the maximum intensity to landfall intensity based on energy production and surface dissipation. The distance between the maximum intensity and landfall location is found to be the dominant factor in the decay process, while environmental conditions are generally less influential.

Unexpected limitation of tropical cyclone genesis by subsurface tropical central-north Pacific during El Nino

Cong Gao et al.

Summary: Research shows that changes in subsurface heat content in the tropical central-north Pacific counteract the favorable sea surface temperatures for tropical cyclone genesis. This is critical for understanding the dynamics of tropical cyclone formation.

Spatial-temporal flood inundation nowcasts by fusing machine learning methods and principal component analysis

Li-Chiu Chang et al.

Summary: The frequency and severity of floods have increased worldwide due to climate change and urbanization. This study aims to build an urban flood warning system using machine learning and statistical techniques to forecast regional flood inundation. The proposed methodology integrates the advantages of Principal Component Analysis, Self-Organizing Map, and Nonlinear Autoregressive with Exogenous Inputs to produce accurate and stable multi-step-ahead forecasts for flood inundation.

On the future zonal contrasts of equatorial Pacific climate: Perspectives from Observations, Simulations, and Theories

Sukyoung Lee et al.

Summary: Changes in the zonal gradients of sea surface temperature (SST) in the equatorial Pacific have significant implications for global climate. However, there is a discrepancy between observed historical trends and simulated climate model projections. This disparity may be due to errors in the model's forced response or underestimation of multi-decadal internal variability. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for reducing uncertainty and making informed decisions about climate risk mitigation.

Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Database Created by the China Meteorological Administration

Xiaoqin Lu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the access to and characteristics of the tropical cyclone (TC) database maintained and actively developed by the China Meteorological Administration, which records data on all TCs passing through the western North Pacific and South China Sea since 1949. With continuous TC monitoring and multi-source data collection, the database now comprises a wide range of information related to TCs, supporting ongoing research into TC climatic activity and forecasting.

A global analysis of subsidence, relative sea-level change and coastal flood exposure

Robert J. Nicholls et al.

Summary: Land subsidence and uplift impact the rate of sea-level rise, with coastal populations experiencing faster rates of relative sea-level rise. The global average relative sea-level rise is 2.5 mm per year, but coastal inhabitants may experience up to four times faster rise due to subsidence.

Modeling of a compound flood induced by the levee breach at Qianbujing Creek, Shanghai, during Typhoon Fitow

Yuhan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates a serious flood event in Shanghai caused by a levee breach, using a 2D hydro-inundation model to analyze the dynamics and compound effects of the flooding. The worst-hit areas are predicted to be low-lying settlements and farmland, with the most critical time for flood prevention identified as the first 1-3 hours after dike failure.

The Sea-Level Changes in Hong Kong From Tide-Gauge Records and Remote Sensing Observations Over the Last Seven Decades

Fang Zou et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes the importance of studying sea-level change in Hong Kong due to factors like high population density and intensive urban development. By analyzing tide-gauge records and satellite-altimetry data, researchers found significant variations in sea-level change rates at different stations along the relatively small coastline, influenced by different ocean current patterns and freshwater discharge in the Pearl River Estuary.

Spatio-temporal dynamics of flood exposure in Shenzhen from present to future

Gizem Mestav Sarica et al.

Summary: Being one of the fastest growing cities in the Pearl River Delta region, Shenzhen has experienced a significant increase in population over the past few decades. The rapid urbanization has heightened potential flood risks, making it crucial to evaluate changes in exposure for flood risk management. The study utilized the SLEUTH model to predict the built-up area in Shenzhen for 2030, showing a nearly threefold increase, and identified a significant rise in the area exposed to high flood hazard levels from present to future.
