Fugitive gypsum dust deposition on a neighboring wildlife refuge, Antioch Dunes, California, USA

Nicholas J. Spada et al.

Summary: Fugitive dust emissions have impacts on both humans and other organisms. In the Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge (ADNWR) in California, established to protect the endangered Apodemia mormo langei butterfly, there is a gypsum processing facility separating the refuge into two land units. This study demonstrates that fugitive gypsum dust deposition occurs in the downwind unit of the ADNWR, potentially affecting the endangered butterfly and its ecosystem.

Evaluation of pollution indices, health hazards and source identification of heavy metal in dust particles and storm trajectory simulation using HYSPLIT model (Case study: Hendijan center dust, southwest of Iran)

Seyedeh Akram Jooybari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the concentration of heavy metals and the assessment of environmental and human health risk in the dust samples of the Hendijan region in Iran. The results show high concentrations of heavy metals such as Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, As, Pb, and Cd in the dust samples. The pollution assessment indicates high enrichment of As, Ni, and Cr metals in the fine dust. The environmental risk of the dust samples is low, but there is a higher health risk in children compared to adults, with Cr, As, and Ni being the main contributors. The analysis also reveals that As, Cu, Cd, Cr, and Ni have anthropogenic origins while Zn and Pb are geogenic. The study traces the origin of the dust mass to Northern Iraq and Southeastern Syria through the HYSPLIT model.

A Comprehensive Review of Organochlorine Pesticide Monitoring in Agricultural Soils: The Silent Threat of a Conventional Agricultural Past

Evangelia N. Tzanetou et al.

Summary: Soil, as a central environmental compartment, is polluted by various contaminants primarily due to human activities. Among them, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are of major concern, even though they have been banned for decades due to their persistence and potential health effects. This review provides an overview of monitoring studies on OCPs in soils published in the past 30 years, as well as the development of analytical methods and extraction procedures for their determination. The findings confirm the contamination of soil by OCPs over the past several decades, highlighting the importance of considering soil pollution by OCPs in the characterization of overall soil quality, particularly given that a significant portion of global soils are marginally suitable for cultivation and related activities due to the presence of persistent organic contaminants.
