Experimental study and performance analysis of the flexural strength of reinforced ice slabs

Wenyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increased interest in prefabricated ice rinks for international competition. The support layer of the ice sheet, made of extruded polystyrene foam board, is prone to bending failure. To address this, a method of reinforcing ice slabs with welded steel mesh (SRI) was proposed. This study conducted three-point bending tests, theoretical derivation, and finite element analysis to gain a better understanding of the flexural properties of SRI. The results showed that SRI significantly improved cracking load capacity and ultimate load capacity compared to plain ice slabs, and the use of reinforcement reduced stiffness drop caused by cracking.

The tensile mechanical properties and constitutive model of plain ice and fiber-reinforced ice for construction

Xiaonan Lou et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the tensile mechanical properties and stress-strain constitutive relationship of plain ice and pulp fiber-reinforced ice (PFRI). The results showed that plain ice was more brittle under tension, while PFRI material had quasi-brittle characteristics. The peak strength, peak tensile strain, and elastic modulus of both materials were affected by temperature and fiber content. Prediction models for these properties were established based on experimental results. Furthermore, constitutive models based on experiments and continuous damage theory were established to predict the stress-strain behavior and failure characteristics of ice materials.

Influence of temperature and fiber content on direct shear properties of plain ice and fiber-reinforced ice

Xiaonan Lou et al.

Summary: The study found that fiber-reinforced ice has higher shear strength and deformation capacity compared to plain ice. The performance of FRI improves with decreasing temperature and increasing fiber content. By analyzing the shear ductility coefficient, the impact of fiber content and temperature on the durability of ice was determined.

Strengthening of ice with basalt materials

V. M. Buznik et al.

Summary: This paper discusses practical approaches to control the strength and deformation properties of ice reinforced with basalt materials or modified by dopants. The study involved the production and testing of approximately a thousand samples. Results showed that the introduction of basalt materials significantly improves the strength and deformation properties of freshwater ice. Ice reinforcement changes the mechanism of crack propagation and the overall failure of the specimens. The study also revealed the important factors in the manufacture process of high strength ice composite materials. A combination of basalt reinforcement and chemical modification of the ice matrix can increase the strength properties of the tested samples by 4-6 times compared to freshwater ice. Recommendations on reinforcement parameters are provided based on the experimental data and the functional purpose of the ice composites.

Qiang Fu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dynamic compressive behavior of HBPRC under confining pressure, showing strain rate and confining pressure dependence. The addition of basalt and polypropylene fibers can reduce failure degree of concrete and improve shear failure feature. Furthermore, the study established an empirical dynamic strength criterion for HBPRC considering the effects of fiber and pore structure.

Research on the numerical simulation for plastic model of ice as building materials under triaxial compression

Wen-liang Qiu et al.

Summary: This study focused on the mechanical properties of ice in cold region engineering and discussed the strength criteria of ice at different temperatures based on a plastic model. By introducing pores and inclusions into a numerical calculation model, the effects of these factors on ice were studied, revealing their influence on ice behavior. The three-dimensional numerical calculation model considering pores and inclusions provided better reflection of the multiaxial loading mechanical properties of ice.

Splitting tensile mechanical properties of plain ice and fiber-reinforced ice

Xiaonan Lou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the tensile properties of plain ice and fiber-reinforced ice and found that the FRI exhibited ductile failure and significantly improved deformation capacity compared to plain ice. The tensile strength of FRI was approximately 2-3.5 times higher than plain ice and was negatively related to temperature but positively related to loading rate and fiber content. A tensile strength model was established, and design values for ice splitting tensile strength were recommended based on reliability theory. This study lays the foundation for further promoting the application of ice in architecture.

Behavior and Modeling of Circular Large Rupture Strain FRP-Confined Ice under Axial Compression

Yanlei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental investigation into axial compressive behavior of ice-filled large rupture strain (LRS) fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube columns, showing significant improvement in ice core performance with LRS FRP confinement and sawdust addition. The axial stress-strain curves of LRS FRP-confined ice exhibited monotonically ascending bilinear shapes, and the compressive strength and ultimate axial strain of the confined ice were significantly enhanced with increasing thickness of the LRS FRP tube.

Pei Yan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the ductility characteristics of ultra-high performance concrete fibre material by utilizing different micro-synthetic fibres. The type and amount of added fibres were found to influence the properties of both fresh and hardened concretes, with glass fibre having a notable impact on the flowability of fresh concrete. Additionally, the compressive strength increased with the addition of fibre filament, while flexural strength and toughness indexes also improved accordingly.
