4E multi-objective optimization of cold electricity co-generation system based on supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle

Yiming Wang et al.

Summary: This paper establishes evaluation models based on energy, exergy, economy, and environment and carries out multi-objective optimization for combined cycle. The reliability and accuracy of decision methods are analyzed, with a comparison and analysis of cycle performance, economy, and environment benefits under different refrigeration conditions. The results show significant improvements in the overall performance of the combined cycle, with increased thermal efficiency, reduced investment costs, and improved economic and environmental costs for the top and bottom cycles after optimization. The temperature difference in the high-temperature section of the recuperator is significantly reduced in the reheat Brayton cycle after optimization, while the temperature difference in the low-temperature section of the subcooler is increased in the bottom cycle, aiding in volume reduction and improved compactness.

Thermoeconomic investigation of pressurized oxy-fuel combustion integrated with supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle

Nan Zhou et al.

Summary: Pressurization increases power efficiency, and coupling it with a supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle offers higher efficiency than steam-based power cycles with CO2 capture. Three layouts of the coupled system were analyzed thermodynamically and economically, with net power efficiencies of 39.4%, 40.2%, and 41.3%. Sensitivity analysis evaluated the impact of various factors on net power efficiency, and economic analysis showed their attractiveness for coal-fired power generation with CO2 capture.

Search for the Optimal Design of a Supercritical-CO2 Brayton Power Cycle from a Superstructure-Based Approach Implemented in a Commercial Simulation Software

Qiao Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper applies a process synthesis approach to design a closed Brayton cycle with supercritical CO2 as a working fluid and a coal furnace as a heat source. The study demonstrates the limitations of a purely technical optimization approach that ignores the economic aspect. The optimal structure obtained reduces the LCOE by 10% compared to the optimal case found through energy optimization.

Techno-economic assessment of biomass and coal co-fueled chemical looping combustion unit integrated with supercritical CO2 cycle and Organic Rankine cycle

Hossein Farajollahi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effect of co-combustion of woody biomass and coal on the techno-economic performance of a 300 MWth in-situ gasification chemical looping combustion power plant. The results show that increasing biomass share can enhance the CO2 capture efficiency and coal conversion, achieving negative CO2 emissions with high biomass share. The integrated systems of supercritical CO2 cycle and Organic Rankine cycle improve the net electrical efficiency of the plant.

Conceptual design of a small-capacity supercritical CO2 coal-fired circulating fluidized bed boiler by an improved design calculation method

Zecheng Liu et al.

Summary: The carbon peak and neutrality strategy has led to a rapid increase in renewable energy. Small-capacity thermal power units with supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) cycle have great potential in developing regional renewable energy power grids due to their high efficiency and superior flexibility for peak shaving. This paper presents the conceptual design of a 100 MW small-capacity S-CO2 circulating fluidized bed coal-fired boiler using an improved boiler design calculation method. The optimization results show that increasing the hot air temperature and utilizing a flue gas cooler to recover residual heat of the flue gas can significantly improve the power generation efficiency of the S-CO2 unit.

Zhaofu Wang et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the efficiency improvement of coal fired power plants using supercritical carbon dioxide cycle. By increasing the average heat absorption temperature, lowering the average heat release temperature, and incorporating thermal compression cycle, reheating technique, and intercooling, significant efficiency increase can be achieved, resulting in coal savings and reduction in CO2 emissions.

Techno-economic analysis of supercritical carbon dioxide cycle integrated with coal-fired power plant

Dhinesh Thanganadar et al.

Summary: This study analyzed four novel sCO(2) cycle configurations to efficiently capture low-temperature heat and evaluated their performance against the steam Rankine cycle. While increasing turbine inlet temperature improved cycle efficiency, the cost increase did not significantly reduce cost of electricity (COE). Sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo analysis indicated that COE of sCO(2) cycle could be reduced by 6-8%, but uncertainty in cost functions may limit this reduction to 0-3% at 95% percentile cumulative probability.

Economic comparison between sCO2 power cycle and water-steam Rankine cycle for coal-fired power generation system

Jinliang Xu et al.

Summary: The economic comparison between the sCO2 power cycle and the water-steam Rankine cycle shows that the sCO2 power system achieves a higher net power generation efficiency but also slightly higher overall specific cost compared to the water-steam system. Optimizing the recuperator could potentially decrease the specific cost of the sCO2 power system in the future.
