Field application of glycerol to enhance reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes and its impact on microbial community

Marie Czinnerova et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the outcomes of the long-term in-situ application of glycerol for the enhanced reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes (CEs). Glycerol injection resulted in an increase in the abundance of fermentative Firmicutes, leading to the change of groundwater conditions suitable for the growth of organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB). The concentrations of pollutants decreased and the final degradation products were ethene and ethane.

Summary: The bioremoval potential of Pseudomonas plecoglossicida for mixed contaminants was explored through optimizing nutrients and inoculum size, achieving effective removal of a mixture of pollutants including BTEX, TCE, and cis-DCE. The study found that a specific C:N:P ratio and higher inoculum size led to significant removal of various contaminants.

Simulating contaminant transport in unsaturated and saturated groundwater zones

Riki Sarma et al.

Summary: The demand for clean and adequate water is increasing rapidly due to population growth, requiring simulation modeling to measure the quantity and quality of water. Integrated models are crucial for groundwater resources management as they provide a more accurate modeling approach than independent models. In recent decades, modeling of contaminant transport in groundwater systems has seen widespread applications.

Summary: Groundwater contamination by chlorinated hydrocarbons is a worldwide problem with challenges in remediation processes. In Italy, water quality limits during cleanup are defined by Legislative Decree 152/06. In situ bioremediation is gaining importance due to affordability and effectiveness, supported by numerical modeling and isotopic fractionation-reactive transport models to demonstrate natural attenuation processes.

Summary: This study introduces novel exact analytical solutions for a set of simultaneous three-dimensional advection-dispersion equations, coupled with a first-order degradation reaction network. The developed analytical solutions are 104 times more computationally efficient compared to previous models. These solutions have been successfully applied to evaluate the performance and suitability of groundwater pollution models, as well as to investigate the impact of different boundary conditions on contaminant migration.
