3D printed concrete with recycled sand: Pore structures and triaxial compression properties

Yiwen Wu et al.

Summary: The pore structures of 3D printed recycled mortar (3DPRM) were characterized and the triaxial mechanical properties were measured. The incorporation of recycled sand increased the porosity and pore diameter of 3DPRM specimens. The crack development direction depended on both the principal stress direction and the pore structure, and the strength and compressive toughness of the specimens increased with increasing confining pressure.

Mechanical properties of 3D printed concrete with coarse aggregates and polypropylene fiber in the air and underwater environment

Eun-A Seo et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanical properties of 3D printed concrete with coarse aggregates were compared in air and underwater environments. The concrete mix used was based on normal weight concrete with ordinary Portland cement as a binder. Different fabrication methods (printing and mold casting) and conditions (air and underwater) were tested, as well as the use of fiber-reinforced concrete as a variable. Properties such as density, compressive strength, and stress-strain curves were analyzed.

Investigation of the Internal Structure of Hardened 3D-Printed Concrete by X-CT Scanning and Its Influence on the Mechanical Performance

Yanjuan Chen et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the characteristics of the layer-to-layer interface of 3DPC and explore how the internal structure of printed concrete influences its mechanical performance. Mechanical tests and X-CT scans showed that printed concrete has comparable quality to casted concrete with the same recipe, and the lower porosity and fewer large voids contribute to its better mechanical performance.

Criticality of binder-aggregate interaction for buildability of 3D printed concrete containing limestone calcined clay

Bhattacherjee Shantanu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the importance of the interaction between the binder matrix and aggregate in a 3D printable mix when subjected to compression at an early age. Two binder systems with different supplementary cementitious materials are compared, and the effect of two types of aggregate on buildability is studied. The results show that the rheological properties of the binder matrix are critical in the early stages of deposition, while the interaction between the binder matrix and aggregate becomes more influential at later stages.

Summary: This study proposes a computational sequence to extract individual 3D concrete aggregates from computed tomography scans, establishing a database of 1442 aggregates with detailed information. Comparisons with existing reconstruction methods demonstrate that characterizing concrete composite with detailed information of each constituent can provide a more realistic representation of the composite. The vision of digital concrete with realistic aggregates input is further demonstrated through an example application.

Characteristics of 3D-printing ultra-high performance fibre-reinforced concrete under impact loading

Yekai Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of 3D-printing ultra-high performance fibre reinforced concrete (3DP-UHPFRC) under impact loads using the SHPB tests. The findings show that the failure degree of 3DP-UHPFRC varies in different directions, with the worst degree of failure in the X-direction. The elastic modulus and strain rate effect of 3D-printing specimens exhibit anisotropic characteristics, with the X-direction being more susceptible to deformation. Increasing the impact velocity results in isotropic dynamic peak stresses for 3DP-UHPFRC. Furthermore, the dynamic increase factor (DIF) of the 3D-printing specimens is observed to be anisotropic, with the X-direction exhibiting the most significant strain rate sensitivity.

Seismic Behavior of Strengthened RC Columns under Combined Loadings

Hua Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, 25 RC columns were designed and tested to investigate the seismic response considering different loading cases, strengthening methods, and predamage levels. The research findings showed that the strengthened RC columns exhibited more fully developed cracks and changed failure modes compared to the non-strengthened specimens. The bearing capacity of the strengthened columns significantly improved under different loading methods, with the highest improvement observed in the uniaxial compression-bending-shear (CBS) members. The study also introduced a modified restoring force model that reflected the loading method, predamage level, and strengthening method, which aligned well with the test load-deformation curves.

Summary: This study aims to optimize the mixture proportion of green and sustainable concretes by considering functional characteristics, unit cost, and environmental impacts. A new prediction algorithm called Marine predator programming is introduced, and three prediction techniques are employed to assess the performance of the machine learning model. The results show that the introduced model is highly qualified to estimate different concrete features and can significantly reduce environmental impacts compared to conventional experimental mixtures.

The reaction between metakaolin and limestone and its effect in porosity refinement and mechanical properties

Franco Zunino et al.

Summary: In limestone calcined clay cements (LC3), a higher amount of hemicarboaluminate and monocarboaluminate is observed compared to other blended cements, due to the reaction of metakaolin with limestone. The formation of these carboaluminate phases mainly occurs during a third hydration peak, which is influenced by metakaolin content, sulfate addition level, and water to binder ratio. The precipitation of these carboaluminates significantly affects porosity refinement and strength development, while alumina from metakaolin can also contribute to the precipitation of ettringite in the presence of sufficient sulfate.

Investigation of interlayer adhesion of 3D printable cementitious material from the aspect of printing process

Yiwei Weng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of parameters on interlayer bond strength in 3DCP from different phases, including mixing, printing, and post-processing phases. The results showed that increasing superplasticizer dosage in the mixing phase, increasing pumping speed in the printing phase, and proper curing in the post-processing phase can improve interlayer bond strength. While surface moisture content (SMC) has a critical impact, material thixotropic index (Ithix) probably has a stronger influence on interlayer bond strength.

Summary: The use of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) in producing high-strength strain-hardening cement-based composites (HS-SHCC) shows potential for sustainable construction materials, despite some drawbacks in terms of energy consumption and setting times. LC3 substitution slightly reduces compressive strength but benefits flexural strength, fiber-matrix bond strength, and pullout energy, making it a promising alternative to Portland cement for high-performance cement-based composites.
