Partition sums for non-local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions for nine molecules of importance in planetary atmospheres

Robert R. Gamache et al.

Summary: This paper calculates the internal vibrational and rotational partition functions for nine molecules that are abundant in the terrestrial atmosphere and observed in planetary and exoplanet atmospheres. These molecules are often observed in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. The calculation methods, convergence, and uncertainties for each isotopologue are discussed, along with the introduction of a FORTRAN program for recalling the NLTE partition sums.

High Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy in Support of Ozone Atmospheric Monitoring and Validation of the Potential Energy Function

Alain Barbe et al.

Summary: The first part of the review provides a brief overview of atmospheric ozone, including its formation, destruction, observations, and anthropogenic effects. It also mentions the abandonment of the Airbus Alliance project and its replacement with the A380. The major focus of the article is on calculations and observations of infrared transitions, their applications, and the resolution of discrepancies in line intensity data. The final section discusses recent work on the behavior of potential function at high energies.

Multi-spectral investigation of ozone: Part I. Setup & uncertainty budget

Christof Janssen et al.

Summary: This study presents accurate high-resolution spectroscopic measurements of line positions and intensities of ozone in the 5 μm and 10 μm regions using a commercial Michelson Fourier transform spectrometer. The experimental setup and uncertainty analysis are detailed in this paper, while the spectral analysis and retrieved line parameters are reported in the second paper. The highly accurate experimental data serve as a benchmark for molecular calculations and help resolve discrepancies in ozone retrievals between UV and IR atmospheric measurements.

Ozone Formation in Ternary Collisions: Theory and Experiment Reconciled

Marjan Mirahmadi et al.

Summary: This letter investigates the ozone formation mechanism in ternary collisions O + O-2 + M at different temperatures through theoretical modeling and experimental data. It is found that at low temperatures, ozone is formed through the formation of a temporary complex MO2, while at high temperatures, it mainly occurs through the formation of long-lived vibrational resonances of O-3*. At intermediate temperatures, the process cannot be simplified as a two-step reaction mechanism.

Ozone modelling and mapping for risk assessment: An overview of different approaches for human and ecosystems health

Alessandra De Marco et al.

Summary: Tropospheric ozone is a concerning air pollutant due to its impacts on land vegetated ecosystems and human health. Monitoring its concentrations is crucial, but large-scale measurements may be unfeasible. Therefore, modeling and mapping approaches are important to estimate the impact of ozone. Simpler approaches are suitable for local mapping, while more complex methodologies can reduce mapping errors. The choice of models depends on the needed resolution and domain. Ensemble models are preferred in any approach.

High-order contact transformations of molecular Hamiltonians: general approach, fast computational algorithm and convergence of ro-vibrational polyad models

Vladimir Tyuterev et al.

Summary: This paper describes methods and a fast computational algorithm for building effective Hamiltonians in molecular physics using a perturbative approach. The author focuses on deriving effective models for rovibrational spectroscopy from ab initio-based potential energy surfaces with a review of previous studies in this field. The method is applied to multiple types of polyads coupled by different types of resonance interactions, and the flexibility of the modeling operator allows for strong couplings of various types of nuclear motion in molecules. The method is implemented in the MOL_CT program suite, providing a complementary tool to variational methods for molecular spectroscopy analysis.

Springtime arctic ozone depletion forces northern hemisphere climate anomalies

Marina Friedel et al.

Summary: Springtime stratospheric ozone depletion in the Arctic is consistently followed by surface temperature and precipitation anomalies in the Northern Hemisphere. The depletion of ozone leads to a reduction in short-wave radiation absorption and negative temperature anomalies, causing a delayed break-up of the polar vortex and affecting the climate in Europe and Eurasia.

Summary: The ozone holes in 2015 and 2020 reached record sizes in October-December, but still followed a fundamental recovery metric. The delay in early spring ozone depletion is attributed to the decrease in chlorine and bromine. Climate models confirm the observed recovery trends of the ozone hole onset and size.

Predissociation and pressure dependence in the low frequency far wing of the Wulf absorption band of ozone near 1.2 μm

Semen Vasilchenko et al.

Summary: In this study, the weak low frequency tail of the ozone Wulf band was investigated using high sensitivity cavity ring down spectroscopy. Two mostly unresolved absorption bands were identified, and rotational structure analysis and pressure testing revealed significant predissociation effects in the high lying vibrational levels. The derived pressure broadening coefficients of the rovibronic transitions were found to be similar to those of the rovibrational infrared bands.

Towards the intensity consistency of the ozone bands in the infrared range: Ab initio corrections to the S&MPO database

Vladimir Tyuterev et al.

Summary: Accurate knowledge of line parameters and intensities is crucial for measuring ozone concentration in the atmosphere, and ab initio calculations have shown to be effective in achieving consistency in measurements and databases. This paper extends ab initio corrections to ozone band intensities in a wider infrared range, correcting about 40% of intensities for various ozone isotopologues. The resulting line list is now available online and will be used in the future HITRAN20 update.
