Transformation kinetics of exogenous nickel in a paddy soil during anoxic-oxic alteration: Roles of organic matter and iron oxides

Kaiyi Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transformation processes of nickel in paddy soils under anoxic and oxic conditions. The results show that under anoxic conditions, complexation with soil organic matter dominates nickel immobilization, while under oxic conditions, organic matter and Fe-Mn oxides contribute similarly to nickel release.

Stepwise redox changes alter the speciation and mobilization of phosphorus in hydromorphic soils

Sabry M. Shaheen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that in arable soils, P, Fe2+, and OC mobilize at E-H <= 200 mV, while P immobilizes at E-H > 200 mV due to strong binding with Fe3+. Additionally, pH changes and interactions with Fe3+, organic carbon, and carbonates play a key role in the migration and retention of P during redox processes.

Immobilization of lead by amendments in a mine-waste impacted soil: Assessing Pb retention with desorption kinetic, sequential extraction and XANES spectroscopy

Frederico Prestes Gomes et al.

Summary: Chemical stabilization using amendments was effective in reducing Pb mobility in polluted soils, with phosphate and lime transforming Pb species into more recalcitrant forms like pyromorphite. However, organic amendments like biochar and biosolids increased the desorption kinetics of Pb. The study emphasizes the importance of different amendments in influencing Pb speciation and mobility in contaminated soils.

Yanping Bao et al.

Summary: This review paper summarizes the interaction mechanisms between Fe (hydr)oxides and organic matter, compares the characteristics of Fe-OM associations, and discusses the immobilization and remobilization of metal(loid)s influenced by these interactions. Suggestions for future studies concerning the interactions between Fe (hydr)oxides and OM and their influences on immobilization and remobilization of metal(loid)s are also offered in the review.

Role of clay minerals in controlling phosphorus availability in a subtropical Alfisol

Juan Xiong et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significant role of clay minerals, such as illite, in adsorbing phosphorus in subtropical Alfisols, alongside Al/Fe (hydr)oxides. There is a strong linear correlation between P adsorbed by illite and Olsen P levels in the soil.

Long-term and high-bioavailable potentially toxic elements (PTEs) strongly influence the microbiota in electroplating sites

Yating Luo et al.

Summary: The electroplating process produces potentially toxic element (PTE) wastes that pollute the surrounding soils. This study investigated a demolished electroplating site in the Yangtze River Delta and found severe soil pollution by Cr(VI), Ni, and Pb. The spatial distribution of PTEs varied with plating workshops, and the bioavailable fractions of Cr and Ni in different workshops posed potential risks. The long-term and high concentration of PTEs significantly disturbed the soil microbial community, but some bacteria and fungi showed tolerance to multiple metals. Remediation strategies are urgently needed to reduce the bioavailability of soil Cr and Ni.

Modelling evaluation of key cadmium transformation processes in acid paddy soil under alternating redox conditions

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation of Cd speciation in paddy soil under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, revealing important mechanisms such as increased adsorption on organic matter and reductive dissolution of Fe oxides. The kinetic models established for soil biogeochemical processes provided a feasible approach to predict Cd phytoavailability during the drainage phase of acid paddy field, with a stronger correlation to Cd content in rice grain than chemical extraction methods.

The impact of increased flooding occurrence on the mobility of potentially toxic elements in floodplain soil - A review

Jessica Ponting et al.

Summary: Flooding events are increasing the mobilization of potential toxic elements in floodplain soils. Five key processes interact to affect the mobility of these elements, making it difficult to predict the impact. Factors such as microbial mediation, temperature dependence, and soil mineralogy play a role in influencing the mobility of toxic elements in floodplain soils.

Derivation of empirical model to predict the accumulation of Pb in rice grain

Qiao Xu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the bioavailability of Pb in paddy soil and its impact on rice production. Different Pb speciation in soil was characterized, with PbHPO4 being the predominant form. The accumulation of Pb in rice grain was significantly related to Pb content in root, and carbonate and organic bound Pb in soil influenced the accumulation of Pb in rice. Total Pb content, clay, and SOM were effective predictors of Pb content in grain. The predictive model worked well in evaluating Pb accumulation in rice grain in low polluted paddy farmland.

Summary: The study found that the application of HAP can effectively reduce soluble and extractable Pb concentrations in soil, and decrease Pb uptake by rice. HAP can reduce the retention of Pb in the iron plaque on the root surface, thereby alleviating Pb uptake by rice roots.
