The psychosocial outcomes of older parenthood in early to mid-childhood: a mini-review

Joanna Lysons et al.

Summary: In recent decades, there has been a global trend of delayed parenthood. While there is extensive research on obstetric and pediatric outcomes related to delayed parenthood, little is known about the psychosocial outcomes associated with advanced parental age during early and middle childhood. This mini-review examines the current literature regarding the psychosocial functioning of families headed by older parents. It covers the psychological well-being of older first-time parents, the quality of the parent-child relationship in older parent families, and the psychosocial adjustment and cognitive development of children of older parents. Suggestions for future research avenues are also discussed.

Age-discriminated IVF Access and Evidence-based Ageism: Is There a Better Way?

Giulia Cavaliere et al.

Summary: The article discusses whether age-related restrictions on fertility treatments could be seen as ageist and explores potential alternative criteria, such as lifestyle, to access treatment. It argues that existing criteria may indirectly perpetuate ageism and that lifestyle-based discrimination could pose risks of exacerbating socioeconomic and ethnic inequalities.

An exploration of parental age in relation to parents' psychological health, child adjustment and experiences of being an older parent in families formed through egg donation

Vasanti Jadva et al.

Summary: This study found that older parents face more parental stress and poorer relationship quality. Some parents have concerns about their age, especially in relation to their health and mortality. It is important to follow up with these families to understand the thoughts and feelings of the child regarding having older parents.

Monstrous Motherhood - Women on the Edge of Reproductive Age

Stine Willum Adrian et al.

Summary: This study explores the challenges faced by women using reproductive technologies to extend their procreative period, and the discipline of maternal age in legislation, media, and fertility clinics. It points out that while older women who conceive naturally are accepted as mothers, those using technological assistance are met with unease. Therefore, existing laws, media perceptions, and clinical practices need to be adjusted to be more inclusive and less oppressive towards women, their bodies, and their reproductive lives.
