Year-round changes in tropospheric nitrogen dioxide caused by COVID-19 in China using satellite observation

Zhenyu Luo et al.

Summary: The lockdown policy in China during the spread of coronavirus in early 2020 severely impacted the economy and led to a significant reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. Satellite observations showed a sharp drop in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels, followed by small fluctuations and a strong rebound compared to 2019. The rebound of NO2 was mainly driven by the rapid economic recovery, particularly in the industrial and power sectors. This indicates that the emission reduction during the lockdown was offset by the economic recovery, highlighting the need for further efforts to promote low-pollution development.

Spatial Resolved Surface Ozone with Urban and Rural Differentiation during 1990-2019: A Space-Time Bayesian Neural Network Downscaler

Haitong Sun et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative space-time Bayesian neural network model that integrates multiple data sources to predict high-resolution surface ozone concentrations. The results show that rural areas generally have higher ozone concentrations than urban areas, with developing countries exhibiting the greatest differences. Urban surface ozone concentrations are increasing globally, except for the eastern United States, while rural surface ozone concentrations remain relatively stable, except for China and India where they are rising. Using model simulations without differentiating between urban and rural areas leads to underestimation of population exposure to ozone.

Summary: This study proposes a model for estimating the concentration of fine particulate matter PM2.5, which combines land-use regression, the Kriging method, and LightGBM. The model successfully predicts the spatial distribution of PM2.5 in China, with high accuracy and applicability. The spatial distribution of PM2.5 in China shows an east-west gradient, strongly affected by topographical factors. Seasonal variations are evident, with lower concentrations in summer and higher concentrations in winter.

Comprehensive Assessment for the Impacts of S/IVOC Emissions from Mobile Sources on SOA Formation in China

Junchao Zhao et al.

Summary: Semivolatile/intermediate-volatility organic compounds (S/IVOCs) from mobile sources play a significant role in the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). However, the SOA contributions of S/IVOCs have not been comprehensively evaluated, and different parameterization schemes have not been simultaneously compared. In this study, three SOA schemes in the CMAQ model were used to quantify the mobile source S/IVOC-induced SOA (MS-SI-SOA) in China for 2018. The results showed that the 2D-VBS scheme predicted SOA concentrations that were in good agreement with observations, but there were still deviations in some regions. The peak value of annual average MS-SI-SOA was up to 0.6 +/- 0.3 μg/m3, with high concentrations detected in autumn and a notable relative contribution to total SOA in coastal areas during summer. The MS-SI-SOA concentrations varied among the three schemes, mainly due to differences in precursor emissions and chemical reactions. These findings highlight the importance of considering the differences between SOA schemes in modeling studies and emphasize the need for S/IVOC emission control in future emission standards.

Development and application of a multi-scale modeling framework for urban high-resolution NO2 pollution mapping

Zhaofeng Lv et al.

Summary: Vehicle emissions have become a significant contributor to air pollution in urban areas, particularly in near-road environments. Existing air quality models struggle to accurately capture the pollution characteristics due to the complex composition of the underlying surface. In this study, a hybrid model incorporating machine learning methods was developed to quantitatively analyze the impact of vehicle emissions on urban roadside NO2 concentrations at a high spatial resolution. The results showed that the hybrid model improved the estimation of NO2 concentrations compared to the traditional model and highlighted the influence of street canyons on pollutant dispersion.

Influence of Land Use and Meteorological Factors on PM2.5 and PM10 Concentrations in Bangkok, Thailand

Pannee Cheewinsiriwat et al.

Summary: This research used a land-use regression (LUR) approach to study the influence of land use, traffic load, and meteorological factors on PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations in Bangkok. The results showed that rainfall, air pressure, and wind speed are important factors affecting the concentrations. Industrial and transportation areas were found to be the key land use types for PM2.5 concentrations, while residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural areas were important for PM10 concentrations. Traffic load was not found to have a significant impact on the concentrations.

Summary: The study found that PM2.5/PM10 ratios in Beijing have decreased over the past five years, with the most noticeable decrease in high ratio frequency during winter, related to air pollution control policies. High PM2.5/PM10 ratios in Beijing are closely linked to heavy pollution levels, low wind speeds, and anthropogenic pollution transported from the south.
