Microstructural evolution of coal to char after pyrolysis using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy

Wenkun Zhu et al.

Summary: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Raman spectroscopy were used to analyze the microstructural characteristics after coal pyrolysis. The experimental results showed that the decrease of Raman baseline drift revealed the dissipation of sub-stituent, aliphatic, and carbonyl groups with increasing pyrolysis temperatures. LIBS and Raman spectra data indicated that coal undergoes dry degassing, substituent and aliphatic decomposition, and aromatic-ring condensation as the pyrolysis temperature increases.

Investigating the impact of x-ray computed tomography imaging on soluble organic matter in the Murchison meteorite: Implications for Bennu sample analyses

Daniel P. Glavin et al.

Summary: X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is a valuable reconnaissance tool for imaging and identifying different lithologies in extraterrestrial samples. A study conducted on the Murchison meteorite found that XCT imaging had no measurable impact on the relative abundances or enantiomeric compositions of most of the soluble organic compounds. These results provide confidence in the application of XCT technology on other extraterrestrial samples.

Are radicals responsible for the variable deuterium enrichments in chondritic insoluble organic material?

C. M. O'D Alexander et al.

Summary: The insoluble organic material (IOM) in primitive chondritic meteorites is enriched in deuterium (D), possibly due to exchange with H2D+ in the solar nebula. However, our study found that radical concentrations and non-Curie law behavior in IOM do not seem to correlate with its properties, chondrite group, or parent body history. The IOM from Tagish Lake shows a unique increase in spin concentrations with thermal processing degree.

Heterogeneity within refractory organic matter from CM2 Carbonaceous Chondrites: Evidence from Raman spectroscopy

Christian Potiszil et al.

Summary: CM2 chondrites underwent aqueous and short-term thermal alteration on their parent bodies, with studies revealing that IOM comprises two distinct fractions: labile organic matter (LOM) and refractory organic matter (ROM). Chemical degradation can simulate the effects of aqueous alteration, releasing components to the soluble organic matter fraction. The indistinguishable nature of ROM in Murchison and Mighei suggests a common formation process for this meteoritic organic matter component.

H and N systematics in thermally altered chondritic insoluble organic matter: An experimental study

D. Foustoukos et al.

Summary: A series of experiments were conducted to study the chemical and isotopic evolution of insoluble organic material (IOM) during hydrothermal alteration. It was found that the evolution of IOM isotopes depends on the composition of coexisting H2O, and the loss of H and N is temperature and process dependent. Results also showed decoupling of N/C and H/C ratios between hydrothermal alteration and flash pyrolysis, with limited changes in H/C and N/C after pyrolysis.
