Combining geophysics and material science for environmental remediation: Real-time monitoring of Fe-biochar arsenic wastewater treatment

M. O. Siddiq et al.

Summary: The study utilized Fe modified biochar produced from date palm leaves to remove As from wastewater, with both 5% and 10% biochar-amended columns achieving over 98% removal. Real-time monitoring of the wastewater treatment process was conducted using spectral induced polarization (SIP), showing SIP parameters to be sensitive on As removal processes and offering higher temporal resolution than conventional geochemical monitoring.

Time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography mapping of DNAPL remediation at a STAR field site

Lais M. Trento et al.

Summary: The study successfully utilized time-lapse Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to map in-situ DNAPL destruction during coal tar remediation using the STAR treatment technology. ERT provided valuable data for monitoring the remediation process and assessing the effectiveness of the treatment method.

Cross-borehole geoelectrical time-lapse monitoring of in situ chemical oxidation and permeability estimation through induced polarization

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of resistivity and induced polarization data for monitoring the spread of oxidizing agents in contaminated soil. Time-lapse resistivity models clearly show the agent's spread, while induced polarization data are utilized for background characterization and permeability estimation. Time-lapse resistivity tomography can be used to document agent spread, while permeability estimates can help tailor the remediation process.

The influence of porous media heterogeneity on smouldering remediation

Jiahao Wang et al.

Summary: The research investigated smouldering remediation under varying degrees of permeability heterogeneity, finding that smouldering can successfully propagate and eliminate contaminants, but fine layers in parallel may be affected. Connected coarse zones supported smouldering, while disconnected coarse zones bypassed fine layers. This study provides unique insights into understanding heterogeneous scenarios to ensure the successful application of smouldering remediation.

Content and morphology of lead remediated by activated carbon and biochar: A spectral induced polarization study

Na Hao et al.

Summary: This study employed SIP technique to monitor the remediation of Pb by AC and biochar, with results validated through SEM and MIP methods. It was found that the interaction mechanisms between Pb and AC differ from those with biochar, and both AC and biochar showed SIP responses two orders of magnitude higher than typical natural soils or silica materials.
