The Nation's First Publicly Recognized Overdose Prevention Centers: Lessons Learned in New York City

Summary: In November 2021, the convergence of multiple factors provided an opportunity to open overdose prevention centers (OPCs) at existing syringe service programs (SSPs) in New York City (NYC). With political will and support from local and state officials, the NYC Health Department assisted in the establishment of OPCs by OnPoint NYC, a SSP provider. This case study recounts the events that led to NYC becoming the first city in the nation to have publicly recognized OPCs, offering valuable lessons for other jurisdictions considering similar services.

Effect of an Unsanctioned Safe Consumption Site in the United States on Syringe Sharing, Rushed Injections, and Isolated Injection Drug Use: A Longitudinal Cohort Analysis

Summary: This study conducted a multi-dimensional and time-patterned analysis on 543 adults experiencing homelessness and mental illness over a 6-year follow-up period, identifying four distinct well-being profiles: low, moderate, good, and high well-being. Factors associated with better well-being profiles included receiving Housing First, being female and non-white, having post-secondary studies, and reporting high resilience levels.
