Classification of Skin Cancer Using Novel Hyperspectral Imaging Engineering via YOLOv5

Hung-Yi Huang et al.

Summary: Many recent studies have utilized different deep learning methods for skin cancer detection, however, the noninvasive hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system that captures wavelength information needs more investigation. In this study, the ISIC library dataset was used to detect and classify skin cancer types, and the dataset was divided into training and test sets. The performance of the model trained using the You Only Look Once (YOLO) version 5 was evaluated using a confusion matrix and five parameters. Two models, HSI-NBI and RGB classification, were built and compared, and the HSI model showed better performance in learning the features of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The recall rate increased by 7.5% when using the HSI model.

Optical Identification of Diabetic Retinopathy Using Hyperspectral Imaging

Ching-Yu Wang et al.

Summary: The severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR) can be determined by analyzing the oxygen content in blood vessels through fundus images. To achieve accurate and prompt judgments, the study used image processing, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) algorithm, and principal component analysis (PCA) to separate blood vessels, construct spectral data, and differentiate between arteries and veins. The precision and sensitivity of the HSI method varied among different stages of DR, with the highest values in the normal stage and the lowest in the proliferative DR (PDR) stage.

SLIMBRAIN: Augmented reality real-time acquisition and processing system for hyperspectral classification mapping with depth information for in-vivo surgical procedures

Jaime Sancho et al.

Summary: SLIMBRAIN is a real-time augmented reality system that can classify and display brain tumor tissue. This system captures and processes hyperspectral images at a rate of 14 frames per second during tumor resection surgery to detect and delimit cancer tissue. The results are shown in an augmented reality visualization overlapped with RGB point cloud captured by a LiDAR camera. This visualization allows for natural navigation and improves the visualization and effectiveness of hyperspectral technology for tumor delimitation. The whole system has been verified in real brain tumor resection surgeries.

Hyperspectral Imaging in Brain Tumor Surgery-Evidence of Machine Learning-Based Performance

Sami Puustinen et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish a minimally invasive neurosurgical hyperspectral imaging (HSI) guidance system and conducts a systematic literature review on the current indications and performance of neurosurgical HSI systems, with a focus on machine learning-based methods. The results show that the HSI system can be used for real-time data acquisition and visualization in glioma surgery with high accuracy. The conclusion suggests that interdisciplinary collaboration is needed to establish communicable HSI standards and clinical impact.

Nonlinear extended blind end-member and abundance extraction for hyperspectral images

Daniel U. Campos-Delgado et al.

Summary: In this study, a nonlinear unmixing method for hyperspectral images is proposed based on a multilinear mixture model. The robustness of the unmixing process is improved by normalizing the end-members and abundances. Experimental results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method in terms of precision and computational time.

Workflow and hardware for intraoperative hyperspectral data acquisition in neurosurgery

Richard Muehle et al.

Summary: In order to prevent further brain tumor growth, it is important to remove malignant tissue as completely as possible in neurosurgical operations. Hyperspectral imaging can provide spatial information about brain tissue types and characteristics. Further optimization of technical aspects is needed to adapt image processing algorithms for specifying tissue quality and function based on the collected data.

State-of-the-art imaging for glioma surgery

Niels Verburg et al.

Summary: Diffuse gliomas are infiltrative primary brain tumors with poor prognosis, where the extent of resection positively correlates with survival. Identification of glioma tissue during surgery is challenging, making the choice of imaging technique crucial. Balancing maximal extent of resection with preservation of brain functions is important, requiring localization of important brain functions and white matter tracts for surgical decision-making.

Intraoperative Guidance Using Hyperspectral Imaging: A Review for Surgeons

Manuel Barberio et al.

Summary: Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a novel optical imaging modality that allows for contactless and non-destructive biochemical analysis of living tissue at a molecular level. It has diverse applications in the medical field and provides quantitative and qualitative information to objectively discriminate between different tissue types and between healthy and pathological tissue. Despite its potential, HSI is still not widely used in daily surgical practice, but has recently been utilized as an intraoperative guidance tool within different surgical disciplines.
