The effect of land-use change on soil C, N, P, and their stoichiometries: A global synthesis

Dong-Gill Kim et al.

Summary: Land-use change affects the uptake or release of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in soils. Forest to cropland conversion reduces soil organic C (SOC) and total N (TN), while forest to grassland conversion increases both slightly. Conversely, cropland to forest conversion increases SOC and TN. Changes in phosphorus (P) are influenced by fertilizer application rates. Changes in SOC, TN, and TP and their stoichiometries are also influenced by temperature and rainfall, but no general patterns emerge. Forestation with deciduous trees increases SOC, TN, and TP, while forestation with conifers reduces them. These findings suggest the importance of nutrient availability in achieving maximal C storage.

Evaluation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15.3.1 indicator of land degradation in the European Union

Calogero Schillaci et al.

Summary: Land degradation refers to the persistent reduction in the land's capacity to support life on Earth, which threatens ecosystem services. Sustainable Development Goal 15, 'Life on Land', aims to sustainably manage and recover natural ecosystems and restore degraded land. This study evaluated the performance of SDG 15.3.1, focusing on the proportion of degraded land in the European Union using alternative datasets and policy-relevant data sources. The findings revealed a higher extent of degraded land when using higher spatial resolution sub-indicators and a combined proxy of land degradation.

Soil organic carbon stability of vegetation restoration during 11-year-old grassland succession

Jinjin Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability of soil organic carbon and its influencing factors under different vegetation restoration modes. The results show that natural grassland soil has the highest content of stable organic carbon and the greatest carbon sequestration potential. On the other hand, olive grove soil has the highest content of unstable polysaccharides, leading to the least accumulation of organic carbon. These findings are highly relevant for regional policies promoting vegetation restoration and restoring ecosystem function in vulnerable areas.

Land-Use Intensity Reversed the Role of Cropland in Ecological Restoration Over the World's Most Severe Soil Erosion Region

Xin Lan et al.

Summary: Long-term cultivation activities have caused severe soil erosion on the Chinese Loess Plateau. The Grain for Green Project has effectively alleviated the soil erosion problem on the plateau. However, the positive effect of cropland in ecological restoration has been underestimated, hindering a comprehensive evaluation of its impact.

Soil C dynamics after deforestation and subsequent conversion of arable cropland to grassland in humid temperate areas

Agustin Merino et al.

Summary: Land use and plant-soil management have significant impacts on soil organic carbon stocks and properties. This study investigated the mechanisms through which these factors influence soil organic matter dynamics and stocks. The results showed that deforestation and intensive cultivation resulted in substantial loss of carbon, while conversion of cropland to grassland led to the replenishment of carbon, mainly in the mineral associated organic matter (MAOM) fraction.

Ecosystem restoration and belowground multifunctionality: A network view

Dashuan Tian et al.

Summary: This study developed a network-based framework to evaluate ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) restoration. Through synthesizing 293 restoration studies, it was found that soil carbon, total nitrogen, and phosphatase were key functions in predicting the recovery of belowground EMF. The study also revealed that abandoned cropland recovered an average of 19% of EMF during 18 years, with restoration becoming larger with longer recovery time and higher humidity index, but lower with increasing soil depth and initial soil carbon.

Biodiversity alleviates the decrease of grassland multifunctionality under grazing disturbance: A global meta-analysis

Ruiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The research shows that biodiversity plays a key role in mediating ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) in response to intensifying grazing disturbance. The decrease in EMF induced by grazing is alleviated at high levels of plant diversity, and linearly increases with changes in plant diversity. Furthermore, longer grazing duration and more arid climates exacerbate the decrease in EMF caused by grazing.

Unravelling how biochar and dung amendments determine the functional structure and community assembly related to methane metabolisms in grassland soils

Qingzhou Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of biochar and dung amendments on soil methanogenesis and methane oxidation at the molecular and community levels. The results showed that these exogenous amendments significantly regulated the functional genes and community assembly involved in methane metabolism, as well as shaped the co-existence patterns of methane metabolic genes and other related geochemical genes.

Nitrogen effects on plant productivity change at decadal time-scales

Guopeng Liang et al.

Summary: The study synthesized 63 long-term nitrogen addition studies in natural terrestrial ecosystems, showing temporally dynamic impacts of nitrogen on plant productivity with higher variability in acidic soils. A substantial proportion of studies exhibited consistent directional changes in nitrogen impacts over time, with the direction varying by biome type. The temporal pattern of nitrogen impacts was mainly influenced by mean annual precipitation, mean annual temperature, and initial soil pH.
