InSAR-derived surface deformation of Chaoshan Plain, China: Exploring the role of human activities in the evolution of coastal landscapes

Zhaoquan Huang et al.

Summary: This study uses Sentinel-1 SAR data and the hybrid multi-temporal InSAR method to extract the surface deformation of the Chaoshan Plain from 2015 to 2020. It explores the characteristics of ground deformation induced by different types of human activities, including groundwater extraction, land reclamation, and construction. The results show that these activities have different spatial and temporal effects on the surface deformation.

Contrasting beach-ridge systems in different types of coastal settings

Manuel F. Isla et al.

Summary: Beach-ridge systems are common geomorphological features in coastal areas and are used to study past sea-level, climatic, and tectonic changes. This study classified beach-ridge systems into different types and compared their characteristics using a multi-scale analysis. The findings show significant differences between different types of beach-ridge systems.

A re-evaluation of Holocene relative sea-level change along the Fujian coast, southeastern China

Fengling Yu et al.

Summary: This study establishes a database of Holocene relative sea-level observations for the Fujian coast in southeastern China. The findings show that the sea-level for this region did not exceed present levels during the Holocene, except potentially during specific time periods. The study also identifies discrepancies between the sea-level reconstructions and existing models, highlighting the need for further research to better understand the factors contributing to these differences and assess the ongoing sea-level rise.

Embayment-scale coastal evolution and shoreline progradation in southeast Tasmania, Australia

Thomas S. N. Oliver et al.

Summary: The deposition and evolution of barrier systems in southeastern Tasmania are examined using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages. The study highlights the importance of internal morphodynamic thresholds and sediment exchange in driving barrier evolution and large-scale coastal change.

The role of fault reactivation in the geomorphological evolution of coastal landforms on passive continental margins: Evidence from a tectonic estuary in southern Brazil

Viviane Barbosa Gimenez et al.

Summary: Coastal areas are shaped by various factors, including climate, human activities, and geological processes. Tectonic processes play a major role in landscape evolution, but their influence is typically attributed to early stages of continental passive margins. However, this study found exceptions to this rule, with the reactivation of major structures leading to significant changes in the coastal landscape and the formation of a tectonic estuary. The findings challenge the assumption of recent tectonic stability in passive margins and highlight the need for a better understanding of coastal systems worldwide.

Large deltas, small deltas: Toward a more rigorous understanding of coastal marine deltas

Jaia Syvitski et al.

Summary: Deltas are subaerial landforms formed by rivers depositing sediment into standing bodies of water. They are environmentally complex and influenced by natural conditions, sediment input, redistribution processes, and human actions. Deltas play a significant role in terms of their size, ecological importance, and human population.

Climate-driven provenance variation and sedimentary system evolution at the Changjiang distal mud since the mid-Holocene

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the sedimentary system evolution of the Changjiang distal mud since the Holocene is strongly influenced by climate change. The oscillation of monsoon systems plays a dominant role in the sediment source-to-sink processes, affecting the sediment flux and deposition rates. Additionally, anthropogenic activities in south China have contributed to increased sediment discharge and deposition rates. The findings enhance our understanding of the interactions between land and ocean in East Asia since the mid-Holocene.

Microfossil evidence of rice cultivation on the Southeast China Coast 7500 years ago

Xinxin Zuo et al.

Summary: This study reveals that rice cultivation already occurred on the southeast coast of China approximately 7,500 years ago through a detailed analysis of microfossils found at the Dapingding site in Fujian Province. By comparing the regional history of sea level and coastline changes, it is suggested that the emergence of early rice cultivation in Southeast China was associated with high sea levels in the mid-Holocene and the last transgression in the Fuzhou Basin.

The middle-to-late Holocene relative sea-level history, highstand and levering effect on the east coast of Malay Peninsula

Yaze Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated a former mangrove wetland in Peninsular Malaysia and produced new sea-level index points (SLIPs). The study re-analyzed modern vegetation and pollen results to establish the relationship between vegetation zones and tidal levels for estimating indicative meanings for the SLIPs. The results showed a gradual rise and fall of relative sea-level in the middle-to-late Holocene, supporting the hypothesis of additional ice melting during that time. Additionally, SLIPs from the east coast were systematically lower in elevation than those from the west coast, indicating the existence of continental levering during the Holocene.

Sediment budget and morphological change in the Red River Delta under increasing human interferences

Nguyen Dac Ve et al.

Summary: The study reveals the impact of human activities on sediment routing processes in the Red River Delta, and points out that the reduction in sediment in the Red River is mainly due to infrastructure projects and land use changes. Morphological changes in the intertidal and subtidal zones are driven by natural and anthropogenic factors, with rapid intertidal accretion near distributary mouths and severe coastal erosion occurring in response to different events.

Alteration of gravel-bed river morphodynamics in response to multiple anthropogenic disturbances: Insights from the sediment-starved Parma River (northern Italy)

Summary: The alteration of sediment transport regime is a key factor affecting the response of rivers to human impacts. Research on the Parma River demonstrated a shift from degradation to recovery in the upstream sector after cessation of in-channel mining, while the downstream sector continues to be affected by reduced sediment transfer due to construction of a detention basin.
