Recycling rice straw enhances the solubilisation and plant acquisition of soil phosphorus by altering rhizosphere environment of wheat

Avijit Ghosh et al.

Summary: The management of rice straw in south Asia is a challenge. This study found that the application of rice straw and phosphorus solubilizing microbes (PSMs) can solubilize fixed phosphorus in the soil, improve the yield of wheat, and increase organic acid and enzyme activity in the rhizosphere. The recommended application rate is 12 Mg ha-1 of rice straw and PSMs plus 75% mineral phosphorus fertilizer to save 25% of phosphorus fertilizer without affecting yield.

Impact of Long-Term Conservation Agriculture Practices on Phosphorus Dynamics under Maize-Based Cropping Systems in a Sub-Tropical Soil

Ajin S. Anil et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, scientific studies have focused on the effects of global phosphorus scarcity on food security. A comprehensive strategy that considers demand reduction and recycling possibilities is needed. Research shows that reduced tillage and crop residue retention can improve soil phosphorus content and provide additional benefits in conservation agriculture.

Soil phosphorus fate and its lability after a long-term phosphorus fertilizer strategy in Brazilian Oxisol

Marta Jordana Arruda Coelho et al.

Summary: This study evaluated changes in soil phosphorus pools and residual phosphorus after long-term phosphate fertilization. Results showed that higher annual phosphorus rates significantly improved residual soil phosphorus in labile fractions, while initial phosphorus buildup had no effect. The study suggests that the phosphorus accumulation in labile fractions from annual rates can be considered for phosphorus fertilizer recommendation in crop production systems.

The continuous application of biochar in field: effects on P fraction, P sorption and release

Qiujun Wang et al.

Summary: The application of biochar in conjunction with chemical fertilizer significantly increased total and available phosphorus content in soil, as well as enhanced sorption and release capacity of phosphorus. Surprisingly, the biochar treatment showed higher sorption and release capacity compared to the chemical fertilizer treatment, implying physical sorption may be the main mechanism for improving phosphorus availability in soil after continuous 2-years application in the field.

Soil potassium regulation by changes in potassium balance and iron and aluminum oxides in paddy soils subjected to long-term fertilization regimes

Tianfu Han et al.

Summary: Southern China's paddy soils are poor in potassium (K) and rich in iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) oxides, which are affected by fertilizer application. Our study found that different fertilization treatments significantly influenced soil K status, and the forms and contents of Fe and Al oxides also played important roles in regulating soil K content. The combined application of inorganic fertilizer and manure was shown to be a viable strategy for improving soil K availability in paddy soil.

A holistic framework integrating plant-microbe-mineral regulation of soil bioavailable nitrogen

Amanda B. Daly et al.

Summary: This study proposes a framework that unifies modern understanding of the cycling of bioavailable N, including ON depolymerization and solubilization, N sorption and desorption, and microbial ON turnover. By considering the balance between these processes, insight can be gained into the sources and transformation mechanisms of bioavailable N.

Long Term Effect of Integrated Nutrient Management on Dynamics of Phosphorous in an Acid Inceptisols of Tropical India

Deblina Ghosh et al.

Summary: The long-term INM experiment on cereal-vegetable-legume crops studied the impact of organic and inorganic nutrient sources, microbial inoculants/biofertilizer, and lime on different inorganic fractions of phosphorus in acidic soil. Results showed that integrating organics with standard doses of inorganics significantly increased grain yield, while all fractions of inorganic phosphorus were higher in the treatments with full INM package. Combining organic manure, biofertilizers, and lime with inorganic fertilizers is a sustainable approach for phosphorus mobilization and solubilization in soil.
