Boulder transport by ice in the St. Lawrence Estuary (Canada): Influence of shore platform geomorphology and ice-foot development

Guillaume Marie

Summary: This study investigated the movement of boulders during winter in the Sainte-Luce, St. Lawrence Maritime Estuary. It was found that 81% of the boulders moved in at least one of the five winters studied, with most of them moving shorter distances. The relationships between boulder movement and ice activity, weather, and oceanic conditions were analyzed.

Transport properties of fast ice within the nearshore

S. E. Dodge et al.

Summary: Fast ice plays an important role in coastal areas, acting as a protective barrier and a source of erosion. This study reveals that the frictional strength of sediment regulates the stability of fast ice and that measuring the friction coefficient of beach sediment is sufficient to estimate the resistance strength of fast ice.

Seasonality in cold coast bluff erosion processes

C. J. Roland et al.

Summary: The study indicates that freeze-thaw environmental factors have a significant impact on the erosion of coastal bluffs at seasonal timescales, leading to increased pore pressures and frequent mass wasting events. Seasonal upslope erosion is primarily influenced by rising water levels and freeze-thaw processes, necessitating the inclusion of these transient conditions in landscape change models.

Citizen science for monitoring seasonal-scale beach erosion and behaviour with aerial drones

Nicolas Pucino et al.

Summary: Sandy beaches provide natural protection from wave impacts, but with increasing coastal erosion hazards globally, data for informing erosion mitigation and adaptation strategies is crucial. This study demonstrates a novel approach combining citizen science with low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles to reliably produce survey-grade morphological data for modeling sediment dynamics, particularly for analyzing coastal erosion dynamics.

Climate change impacts on Peace River ice thickness and implications to ice-jam flooding of Peace-Athabasca Delta, Canada

Spyros Beltaos et al.

Summary: The study identified major ice jams in the lower Peace River during spring breakup as the main cause of flooding and replenishment of the Peace-Athabasca Delta perched basins. Climate warming is predicted to reduce winter ice thickness, potentially impacting ice jam formation in the future.

Linking Arctic variability and change with extreme winter weather in the United States

Judah Cohen et al.

Summary: The Arctic is warming at a rate twice the global average, leading to increased severe winter weather in many mid-latitude regions. Research shows a physical link between a lesser-known stratospheric polar vortex disruption and extreme cold in parts of Asia and North America. Numerical modeling experiments support a connection between Arctic change and the stretching of the stratospheric polar vortex and its surface impacts.

Assessing bank erosion hazards along large rivers in the Anthropocene: a geospatial framework from the St. Lawrence fluvial system

Jean-Francois Bernier et al.

Summary: Over the past decades, changes in riparian land use and the multiplication of river infrastructures have increased vulnerability for societies and ecosystems. GIS-based mapping allows integration of environmental data, but incomplete and heterogeneous datasets can be problematic for regional land-use planning strategies. High-resolution methods can effectively identify erosion susceptibility and its impacts.
