Dynamics of Antibiotic Resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in France: A Pediatric Prospective Nasopharyngeal Carriage Study from 2001 to 2022

Alexis Rybak et al.

Summary: Epidemiological surveillance of nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage is important for monitoring serotype distribution and antibiotic resistance. A surveillance study in France analyzed pneumococcal carriage, antibiotic susceptibility, and serotype distribution in children with acute otitis media. The study found stable overall carriage rates and a rebound of penicillin non-susceptibility during the late PCV13 period. Non-PCV13 serotypes accounted for the majority of strains and the next generation PCVs may help decrease antibiotic resistance.

Trends in invasive bacterial diseases during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic: analyses of prospective surveillance data from 30 countries and territories in the IRIS Consortium

David Shaw et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the incidence and distribution of invasive diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Streptococcus agalactiae during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed a sustained decrease in the incidence of these diseases during the pandemic, but an increase in cases was observed after pandemic restrictions were lifted in some countries in 2021.

Otorrhea bacterial profile, epidemiology before widespread use of the third-generation pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in French children, a prospective study from 2015 to 2023

Corinne Levy et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to describe the bacterial profile of middle ear fluid from spontaneous perforation of the tympanic membrane (SPTM) prior to widespread utilization of third- generation pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs). The results showed that in children under 3 years of age, NT Haemophilus influenzae was the main otopathogen isolated, particularly in those with complex acute otitis media. In children over 3 years of age, Group A Streptococcus accounted for the majority of cases.

Summary: This study found a decrease in respiratory and gastrointestinal infections during COVID-19 prevention measures, but a significant increase in viral respiratory infections after the relaxation of preventive measures, particularly infections caused by human Rhino-/Enterovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Incidence of acute otitis media in children in the United States before and after the introduction of 7-and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines during 1998-2018

Tianyan Hu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the impact of Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) on the incidence rates (IRs) of Acute otitis media (AOM) in children under 18 years in the USA. Results showed overall reductions in AOM IRs following the introduction of PCV7 and PCV13, but the disease burden remains high in children of all ages.

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Survey of Invasive Haemophilus influenzae in the United States in 2016

Caelin C. Potts et al.

Summary: Antibiotics play a crucial role in the treatment and prevention of invasive Haemophilus influenzae disease. An antimicrobial resistance survey conducted in 2016 on invasive H. influenzae isolates collected in the United States showed that the majority of the isolates remained susceptible to clinically relevant antibiotics, except for ampicillin.

Haemophilus influenzae drug resistance in France from 2017 to 2021: consideration for treatment of otitis media

Anas Taha et al.

Summary: This study described and analyzed the antibiotic resistance of Haemophilus influenzae in France from 2017 to 2021. The results showed high resistance rates to amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and cefotaxime, which were correlated with the presence of β-lactamase and/or modifications of the ftsI gene. The resistance rate to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim was moderate. There were no significant differences in resistance rates according to serotype, age, or gender.

Effects of COVID-19 Lockdown on Otitis Media With Effusion in Children: Future Therapeutic Implications

Mirko Alde et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of social isolation during the lockdown on the prevalence of otitis media with effusion (OME) and the natural history of chronic OME. The results showed that closure of schools and physical distancing rules were associated with a reduction in OME prevalence and an improved resolution rate for chronic OME among children attending the outpatient clinic.

Common communicable diseases in the general population in France during the COVID-19 pandemic

Titouan Launay et al.

Summary: During the first year of COVID-19 circulation in France, the implementation of social distancing measures led to significant reductions in the incidence of common infectious diseases such as acute gastroenteritis, chickenpox, acute respiratory infections, and bronchiolitis, particularly impacting children. Although primary care consultations experienced a temporary drop at the beginning of the first lockdown, they remained above 95% of the expected levels afterwards. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the implemented measures in reducing the circulation of common viruses.

Summary: This study analyzed middle ear fluid and nasopharyngeal swabs from children under 5 years with spontaneously ruptured acute otitis media in Germany. The research aimed to assess disease burden, bacterial etiology, compare MEF and NPS isolates, and analyze Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype distribution. The study found a decrease in AOM cases over the years and impact of pneumococcal vaccination on prevalence and etiology.

Nasopharyngeal Carriage in Children After the Introduction of Generalized Infant Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Immunization in Germany

Markus A. Rose et al.

Summary: Epidemiological data on nasopharyngeal bacterial carriage in children in Germany are limited. Through prospective characterization of NP colonization, the impact of pneumococcal immunization was evaluated. The study found that bacterial NP carriage increased with age, especially in regard to pneumococcal carriage, and serotype distribution changed over time, with a significant impact from universal infant PCV immunization on serotype prevalence.
