Medieval demise of a Himalayan giant summit induced by mega-landslide

Jerome Lave et al.

Summary: Despite numerous studies, the erosion mechanisms of the very high Himalayan peaks remained unknown. However, geological evidence suggests that mega-rockslides could be a mode of high-altitude erosion, preventing disproportionate growth of the peaks. These rockslides also have implications for landscape evolution and natural hazards.

Characterizing the spatial distribution, frequency, geomorphological and geological controls on landslides triggered by the 1933 Mw 7.3 Diexi Earthquake, Sichuan, China

Shenghua Cui et al.

Summary: Clarifying the controls of geomorphology and geology on earthquake-induced landslides is challenging. This study investigates the influence of seismic motion on landslide occurrence in the Diexi region, China, where the valley and the seismogenic fault are aligned. The findings indicate that seismic motion depends on the hillslope characteristics of the landscape, with landslides occurring close or away from the seismogenic fault. Thick lithological units contribute to large slides, while thin units are susceptible to smaller slides or falls.

The role of discontinuities in rock slope stability: Insights from a combined finite-discrete element simulation

Lei Sun et al.

Summary: This paper develops a jointed rock slope analysis model based on the combined finite discrete element method, and validates its accuracy and robustness through numerical tests. The study investigates the failure mechanism and process of rock slopes with different types of discontinuities, providing a promising tool for understanding and predicting the progressive failure process of jointed rock slopes.

Analysis of Flexural Toppling Failure in Rock Slopes Using Discrete Element Method

Yun Zheng et al.

Summary: This study utilized the UDEC numerical method to analyze the mechanism of flexural toppling failure and introduced new parameters to further understand the process. The results revealed that the failure zone of rock slopes includes a first-order instability part and an independent toppling zone, with surface deformation discontinuities being a precursor to flexural toppling failure.
