Improved Mask R-CNN Multi-Target Detection and Segmentation for Autonomous Driving in Complex Scenes

Shuqi Fang et al.

Summary: Vision-based target detection and segmentation is crucial in autonomous driving. However, the mainstream algorithms suffer from low detection accuracy and poor segmentation quality in complex traffic scenes. To tackle this issue, this paper enhances the Mask R-CNN model by using the ResNeXt network as the backbone, implementing a bottom-up path enhancement strategy for feature fusion, incorporating an efficient channel attention module to optimize high-level semantic information, and replacing the bounding box regression loss function with CIoU loss for faster convergence and reduced errors. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved Mask R-CNN achieves better performance than the original algorithm in terms of target detection and segmentation accuracy.

A distinct ripple-formation regime on Mars revealed by the morphometrics of barchan dunes

Lior Rubanenko et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence that large martian ripples form from the same hydrodynamic instability as windblown dunes and subaqueous ripples. Artificial neural network analysis of isolated barchan dunes on Mars reveals that the size of the smallest dunes decreases with increasing atmospheric density.

Surface boulder banding indicates Martian debris-covered glaciers formed over multiple glaciations

Joseph S. Levy et al.

Summary: Glacial landforms on Mars, such as lobate debris aprons, may have experienced multiple cycles of ice deposition and continuous flow, similar to terrestrial glaciers. Studies have found that boulders atop Martian glacial landforms are clustered in bands, with more bands appearing at higher latitudes, longer debris apron lengths, and pole-facing flow orientations. This suggests a correlation between latitude and boulder clustering, indicating ice mass-balance operates on a global scale on Mars.

Boulder sizes and shapes on asteroids: A comparative study of Eros, Itokawa and Ryugu

Tatsuhiro Michikami et al.

Summary: The study provides a consistent and coherent model of boulder size distributions on asteroids Eros, Itokawa, and Ryugu. By remeasuring boulders and combining observations, the power-indices of the boulder size distributions were derived, with Ryugu having the highest density of boulders. Additionally, the study notes that boulder appearance tends towards elongation on smaller asteroids.

Blocks Size Frequency Distribution in the Enceladus Tiger Stripes Area: Implications on Their Formative Processes

Maurizio Pajola et al.

Summary: The study of the size frequency distribution of blocks in the Enceladus South Polar Terrain reveals similarities with the surface fractures and blocks on comet 67P, suggesting similar formative mechanisms. This indicates that the geological activity and surface stresses on Enceladus may lead to comparable block disaggregation as seen on comet 67P. The differences in power-law index for different locations on Enceladus may be attributed to localized tectonic disruptions and fragmentation.

The origins of marine and non-marine boulder deposits: a brief review

J. F. Dewey et al.

Summary: This study identifies 14 mechanisms that result in boulder deposits formation and discusses the distinction between coarse-grained tsunami and storm deposits. It emphasizes the importance of parameters reflecting the period and frequency of transporting waves in distinguishing between the two types of deposits. The analysis may be aided by evaluating flow velocities with distance from the shoreline.
