The evolution of ocean literacy: A new framework for the United Nations Ocean Decade and beyond

Summary: This paper proposes ten dimensions of ocean literacy and recommends expanding previously recognized dimensions in order to ensure that ocean literacy encompasses diverse knowledges, values, and experiences. The framework provided in this paper serves as a useful reference for ongoing ocean literacy research and highlights aspects of ocean literacy that have received limited focus to date.

Towards a 2025 National Ocean Literacy Strategy: Current Status and Future Needs in Primary Education

Summary: Globally, the health of the ocean is seriously threatened due to negative human impacts. Marine science education can play a crucial role in enhancing public understanding of the vulnerability of marine environments and the importance of their protection. However, research shows that most national school curricula lack topics related to marine science. This study focuses on the marine science teaching practices of primary school teachers in Australia and finds that most teachers rarely cover marine science topics in their lessons. Improving teachers' knowledge of marine science and providing more ocean-related educational resources linked to the curriculum are identified as key areas for enhancing ocean education practices.
