Utilization of preventive services in a systemic lupus erythematosus population-based cohort: a Lupus Midwest Network (LUMEN) study

Baptiste Chevet et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the utilization of preventive services in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) compared to the general population. The results showed that SLE patients had similar rates of breast cancer screening but lower rates of cervical cancer screening compared to non-SLE individuals. Hypertension screening was higher in SLE patients, while hyperlipidemia screening was similar. Diabetes and osteoporosis screenings were more likely to be performed in SLE patients, and they also had higher rates of influenza and pneumococcal immunizations.

Screening and Interventions to Prevent Dental Caries in Children Younger Than 5 Years US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement

Karina W. Davidson et al.

Summary: Dental caries is the most common chronic disease in children in the US, with higher prevalence in Mexican American children and non-Hispanic Black children. Early childhood caries can lead to various negative impacts, such as pain, tooth loss, and poor school performance. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends oral fluoride supplementation and fluoride varnish application for preventing future dental caries in children younger than 5 years.

Screening for Hypertension in Adults: Updated Evidence Report and Systematic Review for the US Preventive Services Task Force

Janelle M. Guirguis-Blake et al.

Summary: This systematic review summarizes the published evidence on the benefits and harms of hypertension screening and confirmatory blood pressure measurements in adults, highlighting major accuracy limitations in office-based blood pressure measurement but minimal direct harms. Further research is needed to determine optimal screening and confirmatory algorithms for clinical practice.

Stress, depression, sleep problems and unmet social needs: Baseline characteristics of low-income smokers in a randomized cessation trial

Rachel Garg et al.

Summary: The study aimed to increase engagement in evidence-based cessation methods among low-income smokers through telephone navigation and a specialized quitline. The participants were racially diverse (58% African American), poor (51% annual income <$10,000), and many had low education levels (30% less than high school). They faced multiple unmet social needs, high stress levels, depressive symptoms, and poor health.
