Assessment of the Habitat Quality of Offshore Area in Tongzhou Bay, China: Using Benthic Habitat Suitability and the InVEST Model

Haifeng Zhang et al.

Summary: Coastal zones, especially offshore areas, are facing increasing pressure from human development. Evaluating habitat quality is crucial for the management of coastal zones. This study used the InVEST-Habitat quality (HQ) model to assess the habitat quality of the Tongzhou Bay offshore area. The results showed that the methodological approach used in this study achieved a detailed assessment of the spatial variation in habitat quality. The habitat suitability of Tongzhou Bay water was mainly influenced by aquaculture and industrial sea use. Improving the habitat quality of Tongzhou Bay requires strict control of sea reclamation, optimization of offshore aquaculture structure, improvements to water quality and habitat suitability, and strengthening the protection of areas of high habitat quality.

Summary: High-resolution mapping and monitoring of national land use/cover changes play a significant role in understanding the interaction between human activities and environmental changes. China's Land Use/Cover Dataset (CLUD) provides data for nearly 30 years, using remote sensing big data and knowledge-based interpretation methods to improve the efficiency and accuracy of national land use/cover mapping. From 2015 to 2020, the intensity of land use change in China decreased, with a continued decrease in cropland area and an expansion of built-up land area. The woodland and grassland decreased in natural land, while water body area increased significantly in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. These changes are closely related to development strategies.

Tourism and urban development as drivers for invertebrate diversity loss on tropical islands

Summary: This study compared the impact of tourism and urban island development on ground-associated invertebrate biodiversity and habitat composition on oceanic islands. It found that both tourism and urban land use significantly decrease species richness, abundance, and diversity of invertebrate communities on the islands. Habitat fragmentation and reduction in vegetation density were found to have significant effects on biodiversity on urban islands, while no link was found between land use/cover changes and biodiversity loss on tourist islands.
