Hypereutectic Aluminum Alloys and Composites: A Review

Slavica Miladinovic et al.

Summary: The fast development of the automotive industry has led to increased demands for fuel efficiency, weight reduction, and increased reliability. Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys, with their good thermal and electrical conductivity, high strength to weight ratio, and corrosion resistance, have become popular in the automotive and aerospace industries. However, the higher Si content in the alloy can affect its properties, necessitating grain refinement. Various manufacturing technologies, heat treatments, and the addition of grain refiners have been used to improve the properties of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys.

Effect of composite surface treatments on wear performance of Al-Si alloy cylinder liner

Xinyan Bian et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to prolong the service life of the Al-Si alloy cylinder and achieve energy saving and emission reduction. The composite treatment of chemical etching + laser texturing + filled MoS2 was applied to the friction surface of Al-Si alloy cylinder, which significantly reduced the friction coefficient and weight loss. The laser micro-texture controlled the release of solid lubricant, improving the lubrication property and extending the service life of cylinders.

Experimental visualization of the wear and scuffing evolution of a flake graphite cast iron cylinder liner

Jakob Gussmagg et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the origin and evolution of scuffing in a ring-on-liner contact using an experimental approach. A four-stage scuffing hypothesis is developed based on the analysis. The first stage involves the formation of a scaly structure on the liner surface due to smearing of the honing structure and formation of surface cracks. The second stage is characterized by the formation of breakouts in the liner surface due to crack growth induced by adhesive shear forces.

Anti-friction and self-repairing abilities of ultrafine serpentine, attapulgite and kaolin in oil for the cylinder liner-piston ring tribo-systems

Xiang Rao et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the anti-friction and self-repairing properties of lubricating oil with different silicate-based additives for diesel CLPR. The results show that all additives exhibit anti-friction and self-repairing properties at appropriate concentrations, with ultrafine attapulgite powders additive showing the best performance.

Synergistic effect of surface texturing and coating on the friction between piston ring and cylinder liner contact

Parul Mishra et al.

Summary: Under different lubrication regimes, coated samples with texturing demonstrated better frictional performance compared to non-textured coated samples. The maximum friction reduction was observed for textured DLC coated samples under boundary lubrication regime. This behavior was proposed to be a result of the synergistic effect of graphitisation and texturing.
