Activity of N-H in phenothiazine derivatives: synthesis and applications in fluoride ions sensing and electrochromism

Weidong Zhang et al.

Summary: A series of phenothiazine derivatives with N-H, 3a, 3b, 3c, and a N-substituted phenothiazine derivative, 3d, were synthesized. These derivatives displayed good stability in air/moisture and excellent fluorescence properties. They exhibited remarkable chromic behavior in response to various external stimuli, especially fluoride ions and the application of electric voltages. The addition of fluoride ions led to rapid change in emission color from blue to yellow in these derivatives, accompanied by significant changes in emission intensity. The response displayed high selectivity towards fluoride ions. Films deposited from a blend of 3a and polycaprolactone solutions also demonstrated good ratiometric sensing ability for fluoride ions. Electrochromic devices (ECDs) made from these composites exhibited reversible color changes depending on the applied voltage.

Advances in epidemiological status and pathogenesis of dental fluorosis

Kaiqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: Fluoride is considered a double-edged sword as it can effectively prevent dental caries with low consumption, but excessive consumption can lead to dental fluorosis. Dental fluorosis is characterized by tooth color changes and enamel defects, and its pathogenesis remains unclear. This article summarizes the research progress in the pathogenesis and mechanism of dental fluorosis in the past 5 years.

Phenothiazine-based fluorescent probe for fluoride ions and its applications in rapid detection of endemic disease

Longjia Yan et al.

Summary: Fluoride detection is crucial for environmental monitoring and disease screening. Small molecule fluorescent probes have gained rapid development in recent years due to their high efficiency, selectivity, and low cost. In this study, a novel phenothiazine-based fluorescent probe PHT was designed and synthesized for the quick detection of fluoride ions. PHT exhibited a response time of only 1 minute and a detection limit of 1.3 ppb. Furthermore, PHT showed a stoke shift of around 140 nm, which surpassed previous reports. Finally, the PHT probe was successfully utilized for HepG2 imaging and detection of biological samples with endemic disease.

PFOS-induced thyroid hormone system disrupted rats display organ-specific changes in their transcriptomes

Nichlas Davidsen et al.

Summary: Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is a persistent chemical that can disrupt the thyroid hormone system in humans and animals through various mechanisms. In this study, exposure to PFOS resulted in a decrease in thyroid hormone levels and altered gene expression in the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, and liver. The gut microbiota did not significantly affect the effects of PFOS exposure. These findings suggest that PFOS exposure may affect TH metabolism and transport, but the pituitary or thyroid gland may not be directly involved.
