Automated identification of blastocyst regions at different development stages

Adolfo Flores-Saiffe Farias et al.

Summary: We propose the first automatic method for segmenting all morphological structures during the different developmental stages of the blastocyst. Our method is able to automatically segment blastocysts from different laboratory settings and developmental phases, increasing the knowledge base for embryo selection.

A hybrid artificial intelligence model leverages multi-centric clinical data to improve fetal heart rate pregnancy prediction across time-lapse systems

A. Duval et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether artificial intelligence algorithms can better predict clinical pregnancy outcomes by enriching multi-centric clinical data. The results showed that training algorithms on multi-centric clinical data significantly improved the AUC compared to algorithms that only analyzed the time-lapse system videos. This study demonstrated the importance of considering multiple clinical factors in embryo evaluation and highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence in improving predictive performances.

A comparison of 12 machine learning models developed to predict ploidy, using a morphokinetic meta-dataset of 8147 embryos

Thomas Bamford et al.

Summary: The study compared machine learning methods and traditional statistics in predicting blastocyst ploidy status and found that mixed effects logistic regression performed better. The study used a dataset of 8147 embryos and developed 12 models using different approaches. This research is significant for improving the prediction of blastocyst ploidy status.

Clinical validation of an automatic classification algorithm applied on cleavage stage embryos: analysis for blastulation, euploidy, implantation, and live-birth potential

M. A. Valera et al.

Summary: This study investigates the usefulness of a commercially available embryo assessment algorithm for embryo selection in IVF cycles. The algorithm, based on automatic annotation of morphokinetic timings, showed significant predictive ability for blastocyst development, implantation, and live birth when combined with conventional morphological evaluation, but not for euploidy prediction.

Morphometric and morphokinetic differences in the sperm- and oocyte-originated pronuclei of male and female human zygotes: a time-lapse study

Lee-Sarose Orevich et al.

Summary: This study examined the morphometric and morphokinetic features of male and female pronuclei (PN) in human zygotes. The results showed that male and female zygotes had different time intervals and size differences in PN appearance. Male zygotes also had a higher rate of central PN juxtaposition compared to female zygotes. These findings suggest that embryo selection based on these parameters may result in an unbalanced sex ratio in offspring.

Artificial intelligence in the embryology laboratory: a review

Summary: Traditional morphological assessment of embryos can lead to variability in IVF success rates. To improve success rates, multiple embryos are often transferred, resulting in high-risk multiple pregnancies. Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in the embryology laboratory to enhance IVF outcomes.

Summary: The study introduced a novel AI system called FiTTE for predicting blastocyst viability and visualizing explanations. Results showed that FiTTE improved the prediction accuracy compared to the conventional scoring system, and could display brighter colors for blastocysts resulting in clinical pregnancy.

Characterization of an artificial intelligence model for ranking static images of blastocyst stage embryos

Kevin Loewke et al.

Summary: This study evaluated an artificial intelligence (AI) model for ranking blastocyst-stage embryos and found that it outperformed manual morphology grading in predicting clinical pregnancy. The study also identified limitations related to image quality, bias, and granularity of scores that may impact clinical use.

Embryologist agreement when assessing blastocyst implantation probability: is data-driven prediction the solution to embryo assessment subjectivity?

Daniel E. Fordham et al.

Summary: The accuracy and agreement of embryologists when assessing implantation probability of blastocysts using time-lapse imaging (TLI) is modest, and can be improved with a data-driven algorithm. The use of artificial intelligence models based on data-driven tools shows promise in improving embryo selection and predicting clinical outcomes.

Human blastocyst spontaneous collapse is associated with worse morphological quality and higher degeneration and aneuploidy rates: a comprehensive analysis standardized through artificial intelligence

Danilo Cimadomo et al.

Summary: Approximately 50% of human blastocysts spontaneously collapse, especially those that are non-viable, morphologically poor, and aneuploid. Blastocyst collapse is associated with lower competence, and the worse the blastocyst quality, the more frequent and prolonged the collapse.

Artificial intelligence in the fertility clinic: status, pitfalls and possibilities

M. A. Riegler et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an exponential increase in data generated in the field of ART, with a diverse range from videos to tabular data. Artificial intelligence (AI) is progressively being used in medical practice, especially in fertility clinics, to potentially improve success rates. AI models are being developed to address the lack of objectivity in critical procedures, such as embryo and sperm assessments, but there are still challenges to overcome in order to fully utilize AI in ART.

Interpretable, not black-box, artificial intelligence should be used for embryo selection

Michael Anis Mihdi Afnan et al.

Summary: The potential of using artificial intelligence in the field of in vitro fertilization is significant, but challenges remain in terms of ethical implementation, algorithm interpretability, and clinical accuracy. Current studies show that algorithms can differentiate well between high-quality and poor-quality embryos, but struggle with embryos of similar quality, leading to various epistemic and ethical concerns.
