Middle Miocene paleoenvironmental change and paleoelevation of the Lunpola Basin, Central Tibet

Jimin Sun et al.

Summary: Through the chronology study of lacustrine deposits of the Upper Dingqing Formation in the Lunpola Basin, Central Tibet, it has been determined that the geological period is middle Miocene (15-12 Ma). Stable isotope and palynological records indicate a climatic transition around 13.8 Ma, characterized by cooler and drier climate. New palynological elevation reconstructions suggest a maximum paleo-elevation of 3100-3600 m (average 3350 m) for the Lunpola Basin, consistent with floating-leaf plants data. This study provides new insights into paleoenvironmental reconstructions and paleo-elevation estimates of the Lunpola Basin, Central Tibet.

Late Eocene stepwise seawater retreat from the Pamir-Tian Shan convergence zone (Alay Valley) in the western Tarim Basin, China

Jimin Sun et al.

Summary: Inner Asia underwent dramatic changes in sea-land distributions and paleoenvironment in the Cenozoic, resulting in the retreat of the proto-Paratethys and the formation of the largest mid-latitude dryland in Central Asia. The Alay Valley, which connected the Tarim and Tajik Basins, experienced a major change in altitude and witnessed the final seawater retreat at 37.8 Ma. The timing and process of this retreat are important for understanding tectonics, surface processes, and climate.

Kinematics of Cenozoic Shortening of the Hotan Anticline Along the Northwestern Margin of the Tibetan Plateau (Western Kunlun, China)

Guillaume Baby et al.

Summary: Kinematic constraints on the Cenozoic deformation along the northwestern edge of the Tibetan Plateau remain limited. Combining surface geological data and seismic profiles, this study investigates the structural geometry and kinematics of the Hotan anticline. The results suggest that the Hotan anticline results from a fault-bend fold and subsequent footwall duplex deformation. The shortening rate of the Hotan thrust system varied over time and may indicate a regional kinematic reorganization by the late Miocene.

Timing and mechanisms of Tibetan Plateau uplift

Lin Ding et al.

Summary: This review discusses the temporal and spatial distribution of surface uplift in the Tibetan Plateau and the geodynamic mechanisms behind it. The initial collision between India and Asia and the subsequent formation of the high Tibetan Plateau are still not well understood, but the uplift is primarily controlled by delamination and break-off of the subducted Indian and Asian lithosphere.

The rise and demise of the Paleogene Central Tibetan Valley

Zhongyu Xiong et al.

Summary: Studying the Paleogene topography and climate of central Tibet provides insights into collisional tectonic mechanisms and their connection to climate and biodiversity. Evidence suggests that the Lunpola Basin in central Tibet experienced significant surface uplift of at least 2.0 kilometers over the past 38 million years, transforming it into a plateau.

Himalayan Miocene adakitic rocks, a case study of the Mayum pluton: Insights into geodynamic processes within the subducted Indian continental lithosphere and Himalayan mid-Miocene tectonic regime transition

Chao Lin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the Mayum granodiorite porphyries may have originated from partial melting of the subducted Indian thickened ancient mafic lower crust mixed with depleted mid-ocean ridge basalt mantle material input. The middle Miocene Himalayan adakitic rocks formed a belt of similar adakitic rocks in the Northern Himalaya to the south of the Indus-Tsangpo Suture Zone, indicating similarities in petrogenesis and geodynamic settings within the region.

First evidence of eclogites overprinted by ultrahigh temperature metamorphism in Everest East, Himalaya: Implications for collisional tectonics on early Earth

Jia-Min Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the burial and exhumation processes of granulitized eclogites in the Everest east region, central Himalaya. The results show that the eclogites underwent eclogitization and ultra-high temperature conditions induced by over-thickened felsic crust and lithosphere thinning. This case study provides insights into the UHT conditions during continental collision and suggests a global pattern of Himalaya-type continental subduction/collision during the Paleoproterozoic.

Underthrusting of the Tarim Lithosphere Beneath the Western Kunlun Range, Insights From Seismic Profiling Evidence

Shengli Wang et al.

Summary: The uplift of the western Kunlun range is a result of the Indian indentation into Eurasia and the underthrusting of the Tarim lithosphere. The study determines that the western Kunlun mountain range started to uplift slightly before 40 million years ago and the modern geomorphology of the Tarim Basin took shape around 25 million years ago. The underthrusting rate of the Tarim lithosphere is approximately 8.18 mm/yr, combining a shortening rate and a latitudinal propagation rate.

Cenozoic Tectono-Geomorphologic Evolution of the Pamir-Tian Shan Convergence Zone: Evidence From Detrital Zircon U-Pb Provenance Analyses

Yingying Jia et al.

Summary: The study on sediments from the Tierekesazi section in the Pamir-Tian Shan corridor reveals a shift in sediment source from the Tian Shan to the Northern Pamir around 41-40 million years ago, indicating the Cenozoic evolution of the Pamir-Tian Shan orogens. This suggests an asymmetric drainage system in the Pamir with larger basins in the western Pamir, and the uplift of the SW Tian Shan as the primary provenance of sediments in the late Miocene.
