The effects of visual landscape and traffic type on soundscape perception in high-rise residential estates of an urban city

Johann Kay Ann Tan et al.

Summary: In densely populated urban areas, residents are increasingly exposed to noise pollution from traffic, construction, and other undesirable human activities, which may have adverse effects on their well-being. Using Singapore as a case study, this research investigates the soundscapes in such urban spaces and examines the impact of traffic and landscape features on soundscape perception. A predictive model based on acoustics, psychoacoustics, and audio features is developed. The findings show that traffic (40%) and natural sounds (36%) dominate the soundscapes in the selected urban areas. The study also identifies the significant effects of traffic conditions and landscape features on soundscape perception, highlighting the importance of considering the type of traffic infrastructure in residential planning.

Contingent valuation of road traffic noise: A case study in China

Hui Ma et al.

Summary: This study examined the community responses to road traffic noise and willingness to pay for noise reduction in China. The results showed a rapid increase in highly annoyed individuals with exposure to road traffic noise, and residents' willingness to pay was significantly influenced by annoyance level, age, income, and previous noise prevention methods used. Residents' willingness to pay increased nonlinearly with noise exposure level, with households willing to pay an average of 162.64 RMB to reduce noise.

The influence of companion factors on soundscape evaluations in urban public spaces

Jingwen Cao et al.

Summary: This study found that companion factors influence how people perceive sounds, with accompanied individuals more likely to notice human activity sounds and those with closer relationships more likely to prefer social sounds. However, other factors may interfere with the impact of companion factors.
