Insecticidal potential of extracts, fractions, and molecules of Aconitum heterophyllum Wall ex. Royle against aphid Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Sandeep Kumar et al.

Summary: In the current study, the residual toxicity of extracts, fractions, and isolated compounds of Aconitum heterophyllum were evaluated against Aphis craccivora. The ethanolic and aqueous methanolic extracts showed effective control against A. craccivora. Among the fractions, the n-butanol fraction of the aqueous methanolic extract was the most effective, followed by the ethyl acetate fraction of the ethanolic extract and the n-hexane fraction of both extracts. Aconitic acid was identified as the most effective pure molecule. The study also suggested that the action of the ethanoic extract might involve the inhibition of glutathione S-transferase in A. craccivora.

Qiang Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a biphasic deep eutectic solvent system was designed for the extraction of bioactive compounds from the residue of the Chinese herb Evodia lepta. The aqueous phase of the deep eutectic solvent enabled efficient extraction of alkaloids from plant cells, while the hydrophobic ethyl acetate phase facilitated the transfer and concentration of the extracted compounds. This biphasic extraction system significantly improved the extraction efficiency compared to traditional methanol extraction.

NADES-based essential oil extraction and isolation of new epoxysesquiterpene from Ageratina adenophora flowers

Gaurav Aggarwal et al.

Summary: In the past decade, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have gained attention as a sustainable alternative to conventional organic solvents due to their low toxicity, diverse metabolite solubility, and biodegradability. This study explores the use of choline chloride (CC) and lactic acid (LA)-based NADES as pre-extraction media for Ageratina adenophora flowers prior to hydrodistillation, resulting in an increased yield of essential oil. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis revealed the chemical diversity of the essential oils, and a new sesquiterpene molecule with an epoxy group was discovered without the use of chromatography techniques. Additionally, the molecular structure, absolute configuration, and anti-acetylcholinesterase activity of the essential oils and isolated molecule were investigated using spectroscopy and microscopy techniques.

Optimization of Extraction of Phlorotannins from the Arctic Fucus vesiculosus Using Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents and Their HPLC Profiling with Tandem High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Ekaterina D. Obluchinskaya et al.

Summary: Phlorotannins are secondary metabolites produced mainly by brown seaweeds and have diverse bioactivities. Ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) using solvents such as methanol, acetone, ethanol, and ethyl acetate is a suitable method for extracting polyphenols. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have been proposed as green solvents for the extraction of polyphenols, and optimization of extraction conditions can lead to high yield of phlorotannins with antioxidant potential. Chemical profiling of phlorotannins in NADES extract showed the presence of 32 different compounds, indicating that NADES could be an effective alternative for the extraction of phlorotannins with high antioxidant potential.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) assisted extraction of essential oil from Nardostachys jatamansi (D.Don) DC with insecticidal activities

Mehak Sharma et al.

Summary: Different combinations of Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) were used as a cosolvent for extracting essential oil (EO) from Nardostachys jatamansi roots, resulting in increased EO yield and phytochemical variation compared to the conventional hydro-distillation method using water. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis identified 34 compounds in the extracted EOs, with valeranone and nerolidol present in all samples and other molecules showing compositional variability. The EOs exhibited insecticidal and enzyme inhibitory activity against Aphis craccivora and Planococcus lilacinus, and the toxicity was attributed to the high concentration of metabolites such as valeranone, β-patchoulene, nerolidol, α-cadinol, and viridiflorol. Furthermore, the EOs from water showed significant inhibition of glutathione S-transferase and acetylcholinesterase in both A. craccivora and P. lilacinus.

Application of deep eutectic solvent as novel co-solvent for oil extraction from flaxseed using sonoenergy

Adeeb Hayyan et al.

Summary: Using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as novel cosolvents in combination with organic solvents like tetrahydrofuran (THF) and n-hexane can enhance oil extraction from flaxseeds. Different organic solvents were tested, with n-hexane and THF resulting in the highest oil yield. The addition of DES to n-hexane improved extraction yield and reduced extraction temperature, offering potential economic benefits in terms of energy consumption and operational risks versus using n-hexane alone.

Summary: This study examined the ability of acid-based natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) to co-extract glycyrrhizic acid (GA) and trace elements from licorice roots. The results showed that lactic acid-based NADES had higher extraction efficiency for GA compared to other tested NADES. The recovery of trace elements by all tested NADES was low. Calculations indicate that the NADES extracts of licorice roots are nontoxic and pose no health risks.
