Global burden and trends of sexually transmitted infections from 1990 to 2019: an observational trend study

Yang Zheng et al.

Summary: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a global public health issue, but there is limited research on their burden and trends. According to this study, although most countries have seen a decrease in STIs incidence rates and DALYs, the absolute number of cases and DALYs has increased from 1990 to 2019. STIs continue to be a global public health challenge, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.

Genital Abnormalities, Hormonal Contraception, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Transmission Risk in Rwandan Serodifferent Couples

Kristin M. Wall et al.

Summary: Factors associated with HIV acquisition in women include genital ulceration in the female partner and nonulcerative STI in the male partner, while factors associated with HIV acquisition in men include nonulcerative STI in the female partner, non-STI vaginal dysbiosis, and genital ulceration in the male partner. Hormonal contraception use was not found to be associated with HIV transmission or acquisition. The findings highlight the importance of integrating HIV services with care for genital abnormalities and addressing barriers to joint HIV/STI testing.
