The labour market outcomes of transgender individuals

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between minority gender identity status and income, employment, and poverty rates using data from the 2015 United States Transgender Survey. The results show that all transgender groups have lower incomes and are more likely to be in poverty compared to men in the American Community Survey. Transgender individuals assigned female at birth have lower incomes and are more likely to work part-time. The study also finds that the degree of social transition affects income levels, with younger transgender individuals who can better 'pass' reflecting the income profiles of their gender identity.

Economic outcomes for transgender people and other gender minorities in the United States: First estimates from a nationally representative sample

Summary: We provide the first estimates of economic outcomes for transgender people and other gender minorities in the United States. The results indicate that non-cisgender individuals face significant economic challenges, including lower employment rates, higher poverty rates, greater reliance on public health insurance, and higher levels of food insecurity. Additionally, non-cisgender Black individuals experience even worse economic outcomes compared to non-cisgender white individuals.

Does gender still matter? An examination of small business performance

Transgender Men and Women in 2015: Employed, Unemployed, or Not in the Labor Force
