Psychological and Sociocultural Determinants in Childhood Asthma Disease: Impact on Quality of Life

Sheila Plaza-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Asthma, the most common chronic disease in childhood, leads to various psychological and sociocultural detriments, affecting the quality of life of asthmatic children. Emotions, such as anxiety and depression, are closely associated with childhood asthma, as well as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Shyness and impulsivity are common personality traits among these children, while psychopathic behaviors, aggression, and psychosis are exceptionally linked. Impaired school performance and increased bullying are observed. Dysfunctional family relationships and lower socioeconomic status negatively impact the severity and management of asthma.

Anxiety, depression, and asthma: New perspectives and approaches for psychoneuroimmunology research

Jasmine I. Caulfield

Summary: The field of psychoneuroimmunology has advanced understanding on the link between immunology and mental health, providing insights on how asthma, air pollution, and chronic inflammation contribute to the development of internalizing disorders. Sex and age differences play a role in asthma prevalence and internalizing disorder development, while air pollution exposure is associated with increased risks. Future studies may focus on identifying therapies that can treat both asthma and internalizing disorders simultaneously, potentially reducing mental health diagnoses in asthma patients.
