A review of active and passive hybrid systems based on Dielectrophoresis for the manipulation of microparticles

Abdulla Al-Ali et al.

Summary: Particle separation plays a vital role in various systems, and microfluidics offers a promising method for achieving this. Microfluidics enables precise manipulation and separation of particles at the micrometer scale using well-defined structures and controlled force fields. Depending on the types of forces involved, microfluidic particle manipulation can be classified as active or passive. Active microfluidics allows real-time control and placement of particles, while passive microfluidics offers simplicity and high throughput. Hybrid techniques combining both active and passive processes have been developed to optimize particle separation. This study provides a comprehensive review and evaluation of hybrid devices based on dielectrophoresis, discussing their principles, advantages, and disadvantages. Additionally, it offers a thorough explanation of dielectrophoresis concepts and operating procedures, along with an examination of the advantages and disadvantages of DEP-based separation devices. The challenges and future prospects of the hybrid separation sector are also discussed.
